Hi there, I've just flipped my Flats Flyer and now I'm going to have a ton of questions. I guess I'll start with a simple one about the transom drain plugs. I will be trailering and I was planning on installing two at the lowest drain points in the transom. My question is, what kind of thru transom drain plug did you use?

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.: weight of boat?

Post by Alexile »

Thanks, that picture is actually very helpful! I'm searching for a trailer as well, and was wondering what weight I should be looking at? I know I read that the dry hull weight for the Flats Flyer was around 800 lbs. So, with engine, batteries, fuel, water, etc I was wondering if anyone knows the weight? Thanks again!

If I remember mine was 1600lbs..with motor...
There's a company in Charleston SC...that builds trailers...
I talked to 6 different companies when searching for my trailer..he was the only one that said...send him pictures...wanted weight..
And we're I thought my center of gravity was..on my boat...
Thank goodness we have Bill on this forum...
Not sure were you are in the world...but
Charleston Trailer...will always build all my trailer's...

Not shure where you live...
But my recommendation is you want a hatch that's very low profile the lower the better that way as you're walking across your decks and different places they don't become a tripping hazard

Has anyone installed a live well? I'm looking into it and I'm hesitant about putting more holes in my hull than are absolutely necessary.

I was going to put a live well in...the space were my transom speakers are at...and I still can...
But I had the same thought as you...it is done in boats all the time....I just could not drill any more holes in my Flyer...
I use a very nice cooler ...and my big one is a barrel cut in half..

I was looking at an older (early 2000's) Evinrude 4 stroke 70hp (when it was apparently really a Suzuki) anyone have any thoughts about pairing this motor with the Flats Flyer?

Any suggestions on the Sole Drain? Thru sides or to transom? If to transom how is the water evacuated?

Go to page 10 of my build...
I have a few pictures...it drains to the bottom keel of the boat..
I put a bilge pump on each side of the keel...one pump is automatic...the other pump is manual....
Hope this helps...

Hello specialk!
Fantastic information here. Thanks for sharing with all of us. That's a lot of extra time and effort. It is greatly appreciated.

I am sorry if I missed this, but do you have a bit of info on the gas tank install and running power to it?

Thanks!

Yes, thank you! I was hoping to move the weight forward like that, but I'm not sure that I have the space in my center console. (Plus I might end up with 3 batteries, a cranking battery and two others set up to be both house and 24 V trolling motor...)
