barrel back 19 in annapolis

Postby benpetre » Sat Nov 22, 2014 12:24 pm

Looking for advice from previous bb builders. It took months, but I got my form, stringers, frames, breast hook etc, lined up, leveled, epoxied and bolted on. I am setting the keel in and dry fitting and see that it lies straight over all the frames without any bend except over frame 5 where it seems that 5 is prominent. I have to clamp it down on 4 and 6 to make it set into the grooves. See pics. I double checked where my "set up level" lines are and i have Frame 5 where I think it is supposed to be. So, this slight curve in the keel is either:

1 supposed to be there
or
2 because frame 5 is off (likely not inset enough into the stringers).

If it is the latter, than I probably need to do something about it. I feel my options are
1. Cut this frame out of the entire build (it is epoxied in)
2. trim the existing frame symetrically to make it fit at the bottom and then shim the sides/top where nessecary.

Thoughts?

My Torpedo keel is flat from transom through frame 4 like the plans show and has a slight rise through 5 to 6 like the plans show. I think it is supposed to be that way and most likely the BB is as well.

I ran in to the same problem with the Gentry...I followed the plans religiously, and double checked everything. According to Glen-l that's the way it is, tho' mine started nearer frame 3.. I made sure the last sections were perfectly flat and that's it for me. Very frustrating when all the plans stress making sure everything is straight, when the frames as drawn do not allow it!
I'd say leave it alone. I can always add trim tabs if needed.

Hi Ben,

Looks good to me..i am building 23ft barell back and looks the same as i have....keel does deepen towards the bow..
If you like do a check with some temp battens along the bottom and sides ...if that looks close i would proceed....

Good job..

Thanks all. Maybe my eyes stink because it looked flat on the plans but after roberta's reply, I put a straight edge on the plan and sure enough there is a slight bow to the keel. Mine still looks bigger than the plan, but I will trust in Hankinson and my ability (or lack there of) to follow the full size layouts!

It is easier to fix a broken bone :)

there will be a rounding in the transition to the bow. ...there should be no concave areas however. run a few strips of wood around at the chines and sheer, sighting for a clean fair line at those points and confirm the fairness and alignment of the frames and hull.
keep on building :D :D

Wow. Making curly-q's with the plane is extremely satisfying. They should prescribe this as a medicine.

I asked for a power plane for Christmas. May have to return it...hand plane is too much fun.

A bit of advice from a old school Carpenter never let your plan set on it blade unless you are using it I was always told that it dulls the blade, how much fact there is in that I do not know but while going to college I herd about it enough.
Don't be afraid to attempt anything. You might surprise your self in the attempt.
