It's been a while since I posted on the forum and wanted to share the latest on my Key Largo now christened 'Miss Anna'

All of the frames and stem are aligned and level on the stingers and keel installed waiting to shape.

On occasion I need to move the project during construction so made a mobile building frame with drop down feet as the shop floor is not level. I use a laser level to set up again after a move, only had to do this once so far.

I now also have the full gallery of the project so far on a new website having just moved it from the google site where it hid before. (http://www.lc-boatworks.com)

Any suggestions on best method to shape the keel welcome.

Regards

Bryan

Brian,

Love that barrel back.
I used a low cost Ryobi power planner on our barrel back. Makes quick and exacting work.

All,

Thought I would share a little more of the progress with the Miss Anna project; keel and stem all shaped (thanks Grampa Steve), chines installed and I am now adding the battens on the bottom of the hull.

The longest mahogany I could find was 14ft to 15ft so I made some handy dandy jigs to cut the scarf joints and glue up the batten halves to form the longer pieces.

I have included a couple of pictures of the jigs for reference and a picture of the current state of play and for those interested there are many more updated pictures of the build on my project website.

http://www.lc-boatworks.com

Comments, questions and suggestions always welcome.

Thanks

Bryan

Bryan,

Looking very nice! Were you able to source the wood locally or did you have to go outside the state?

All of the plywood and mahogany used so far I have found locally here in Boise/Meridian from a commercial seller I use when I am building cabinets for my small furniture business. I have used Scandinavian high grade ply for all of the frame gussets/transom/stem and African mahogany for all frames, chines, battens....

For the engine stringers I used vertical grain douglas fir and had it brought in by a building supply company as it is not the type of thing you find at the local DIY store, although I am sure the commercial desk could probably get it.

Flyinglow hope that helps I have not started looking in anger yet for the ply for the planking but already know my normal supplier does not carry. If you are local you can always reach me via the lc-boatworks site.

Question for the group on planking

Looks like it is 2 layers of ply plus 1 veneer for the sides and 4 layers on the bottom which is then covered with fiber glass.
- For the bottom layer are most builders going with 4 layers of ply, or 3 plus 1 of veneer as the majority is covered with fiber glass?

- Suggestions for what ply to choose and best places to source and also the same for the outer skin veneer?

Thanks

Bryan

Bryan, I went with two layers of 6mm Okoume ply on both the sides and bottom of my Gentry. I followed that up with 1/8" Mahogany for a total hull thickness of about 5/8". She is plenty strong, and I think any more thickness would be an overkill. Just my opinion...... Neel

Bryan,

Thank you for the info. I am in the Meridian area and have been looking at a couple plans, and looking at costs, but was unsure of wood in this area.

I have not found any suppliers in your area in my research but here is a listing I have compiled http://www.facebook.com/notes/home-made ... 4574139228 but I haven't done any searches in your area for materials but the listing might be helpful any way
