Here I will keep a log of my Dyno Mite build. I bought the plans back in 2006. I'm just getting around to starting the project. I think I have enough tools gathered up now to at least get rolling. First materials purchase should be this Friday. Going to buy all the plywood from a local shop about a mile from where I work. I need to place an order from Glen-L for a few things as well.

My dad and I were going to build a Swan Nez Pierce 13 back about 25 years ago. the project never got past cutting out the breasthook. Luckily some of the mahogany is still in storage so I will be starting with that along with some new materials. What do you guys think about Poplar? There was a bunch of it that was bought for the Nez Perce that I will use unless there is a problem with using poplar.

Plans for power include a 1990 15hp Johnson tiller steer for starters 'cause I already have it. I will be on the lookout for a 30 or 35hp Johnson/Evinrude motor of about the same vintage. I would like to find one with power trim and tilt plus electric start. Do you think I will see 35ish mph with the 30 horse?

Has anyone built a Dyno Mite? Any pics of the stand you used to build it on?

Next up cutting out the bottom and sides at work so the plywood pieces will fit in the back of my Cherokee.

Poplar makes very poor firewood. Not enough BTUs. Stick with oak, mahogany or sitka spruce for your framing. Poplar is soft and will not hold up. That' just my opinion.

That's what I was afraid of. Oh well. Thanks for the info.

OK, dumb question time. How do you measure the length and width (# size) of countersunk wood screws? I found a box full of bronze square drive screws that came from the Nez Pierce project. Two different sizes. I can't tell if the short ones are 7/8" or 3/4". The long ones appear to be 1 1/4". I'm hoping I can use them.

There are no dumb questions, unless they are unasked.

Flat-head screws and wood screws are measured by their overall length. Round-head, pan-head etc. are measured under the head to the tip. Size (the #) is based on diameter. You can either look up standard tables online, or take one to your local big box store where they have a measuring device on the hardware aisle.

This might help you out on the length you want to penetrate approx 3/4 into the material you combining it makes for owies if the screw goes clear through. if either will get you to the 3/4 mark then they can be used you also can go deeper but for looks and safety you don't want to completely go through both pieces. you will find you will probably be able to use both in your build in different places

I guess you could muse an icrometer or cuse an aliper or even ruse an uler.
On the other hand, you could just guess.
BTW the measurement does include the head. And if you need to use the head don't squeeze the Charmin.

Cool. That puts me way ahead in the fastener department.


I've been calling around for plywood and I'm coming up with

1/4" fir marine AB $42/sheet
3/4" fir marine AB $68~75/sheet
6mm meranti marine $86/sheet
18mm meranti marine $145/sheet

I was told that the meranti was a little "pinker" than okumi. The sales person didn't know how many plys there were in each sheet. Is meranti OK to use?

OOPS! I seem to have gotten my locations mixed. I was msging Bord. I have no idea where in this world Cameron Park might be.

Borrowed a few more tools from my Dad over the weekend. Got a monster 15" chop saw and a little 8 1/4" table saw. Picked up a few router bits and some long pipe clamps as well.

I also picked up a little bit of mahogany. I got two 11' 3/4" x 1 1/2" pieces, an 11' 3/4" x 5" piece and 5' piece 1 3/4" x 8". Not as much as I thought there was but it's a start.

I received my order of nails and S&G wire from Glen-L today.

How's this for AWESOME customer service!
