 Post subject: motor wieght

how much motor wieght can i put on a tuffy transom. i have found a some older motors but the wieghts are more that newer motors. i know i can beef up the transom. but i need to know how much is to much. the boat is a tuffy. thanks

We don't have a motor weight listing for the Tuffy. On this one, we recommend up to 40hp. That said, we do have some feedback on a 60hp engine on this design in the "How Fast" section of our site:

The 1956 Mk 55 Merc on our Zip weighs roughly 115 lbs. A modern motor of comparable HP will most likely weigh more and if it's a four-stroke, substantially more. There are numerous Zips running heavier motors and they don't seem to have any problems. Once everything gets closed up, with a motor well and aft decking, it gets really solid back there.
