Thanks, everyone. Iggy, I just haven't taken any pictures of the PILES of wood chips and dust I have created. It's just that since I retired, I've turned into an obsessive/compulsive neat freak. I can't stand being rear end deep in crap. Or even ankle deep. You should see my car. The other day I had to go shop and I looked like a dust devil going down the road. I need to open the doors all up this week and do a Bill Murray "Caddy Shack" cleaning to remove all the dust in the hangar.

I probably should have blown out the hangar today, but we are having a bit of a warm stretch in Wisconsin, so I will do it later this week after I have filled the screw holes and finished prepping for the veneers.

One thing I had trouble visualizing was the transition from butt to lap and lap to butt. I attached some pics of the joints as they came out on my Zip. Hope this helps anyone doing this. The Glen-L boat building with plywood book has the best description.

Roberta

This is the joint on the stem where it goes from butt on the keel to the transition point on the stem to lap. Not much, but you need to plan your cutting to leave that little ledge of plywood.

Image

This is the joint on the chine where it goes from lap to butt for the bottom to side joint. Then the adjoining pieces are trimmed and beveled to fit.

Roberta,

Thanks for posting those pics for that deceptively simple joint that seems to boggle the mind before you do one.

On my first build,I agonized for a long time before I just jumped in and followed the instructions, and then it cleared up for me

For any newbies, look at the faring.....there is no difference in the frame fairing where the joint is,it's just a simple cut in the plywood and it goes from lap to butt

Roberta,If you could do a close up follow up shot after the panels are both installed, that would be nice

My pleasure, Warren. It is so simple once you see it. I could not find any pics of these joints so I thought I would post mine to save someone any consternation over this. We will be fitting up the forward starboard bottom plank tonight or tomorrow and I will post those fitup pics.

Yes, it seems to be an intimidating joint but turns out be very simple.

In my veneer, I installed this strake very last. By laying up the strake over its resting place, the joint became very obvious.

Thank you for such a clear pic.

Finally got to puttin' that final bottom panel on today. Between hole filling, sanding, house work, yard work, and laundry, I've too pooped to work on it by the time Rich get home. I need his help holding the panel down for me as I anchor it.

Anyway, here are pics of the progress and the transition joints.

Doing some hand sanding during fitup.

Image

Here I am using old transfer paper to mark the trim point on the panel.

Image

As you work your way forward the panel will curve inward, so it is necessary to trim the joint along the keel until you get to the transition joint.

Image

Trimming the final few inches of the butt joint along the chine.

Image

Notice how nicely the panel lays down along the stem. There are no screws holding it at this point between the keel and the chine.

Image

Once the panel was trimmed and temporarily attached, it was then removed, prepped for gluing and glued.

Image

Here is the transition joint along the chine. It will be sanded flush once the epoxy has cured. The joint on the keel/stem looks the same, but reversed.

Image

And that is how I did it. It was about 6 hours doing the first front panel and about 4 1/2 hrs to do the final panel. Saved some time on the second panel having benefited from the pattern from the first. Hope this helps anyone.

Some very good photos and great work. I'm following behind you on my zip, even though I started before you. Life has a funny way of happening every time one makes plans. Seeing your progress gives me hope and helps keep me going.
