If you are talking about a Mark 58 Mercury, that would be fine.

Yes , Its a mark 58 mercury . Looking at $400 for the motor, controls, gas tank, steering consol. Is that a fair price?

If the motor and all its accessories are in good shape, $400 is a good price. Plan on at least replacing the water pump. If it's been sitting for a long time the crankshaft and lower-unit seals may need to be replaced as well.

We've seen 32 MPH with a '56 Mk 55 (40 HP) on the back of our Zip. Our motor is a little tired and I think we'd see 35 MPH if it was fresh. The Zip should be able to handle the Mk 58's 45 HP with no problems. Externally, the Mk 58 is a few pounds heavier due to more "meat" in the swivel and clamp areas, but other than this it's very similar to the Mk 55.

I don't think the USCG cares what motor is on your boat, although some states may have their own requirements. I'm in California, and this is one of the few things this state does leave alone.
