While you were sleeping..., I spent 7 hours sanding through 120, and 220 grits over the entire hull. I also mounted my skeg. I'll try to get some pics up once the skeg is finish sanded.

Time for bed.

These are some pics of the skeg and how it fits. I gave this a great deal of thought, because sharp cornering is important to me, but I want to minimize trailering issues as well.

Based on Roberta's Chris's and a few other builder's choices where the skeg is concerned, I came up with the following:
-4 feet long
-anchored with seven equally spaced screws and epoxy thickened with silica
-tapered vertically and horizontally on both ends; tallest point is 3/4 of the way back at 2 1/4". The aft surface is fully tapered to a near blade edge (apple seed shape)
-screw holes are filled with epoxy and a small fillet melds the shape into the hull
-aft point is 20" from transom edge

The pics are taken before hull sanding and installation.

Also, after months of analysis paralysis, I ordered some paint.

I decided that I just didn't want to paint my boat that often and none of the single part paints left me with a feeling of overwhelming confidence. Especially after reading several off-forum reviews such as the ones that gdcarpenter posted links to a while back. That made the leap to a catalyzed two-part easy, especially since it was cheaper than the S3 LPU products that I almost went with.

Interlux Perfection would have been my first choice, but they do not have a clear two-part paint--they have a two-part varnish, which according to them, is different and requires more coats, and more frequent re-varnishing (though decidedly less frequent than a single-part varnish)

Alas, I chose Supermarine Ironsides against Chris's sage advice regarding SM products. I am happy to report that they were friendly and very helpful on the phone when I asked about using the clear Ironsides directly on the epoxy. It seems that a 100grit scuff will help lock it in since a primer is out of the question for my sceme.

Plus, of the three systems I strongly considered (S3 crosslinked LPU, Interlux Perfection, SM Ironsides), the Ironsides came in at the lowest cost. I can work with the fumes, and the finish should be very tough and polishable. I think I made the right choice for my boat.

Gald you made your choice on paint. That was one of my toughtest decisions, a lengthy period of analysis=paralysis. There are so many options that it's difficult to filter through the options. Good luck and do report back on the results. Skeg looks good.

I dont believe anybody has tried the Ironsides have they? Hopefully the two part is much more durable than the SM1000 the rest of us have used. Could be just the ticket. "Good luck Stryker, we're all counting on you!"

Progress was slow for a couple of weeks--a lot going on around here. Nonetheless, the paint has arrived. Couple of cans..., seems a bit skimpy for $400+. Oh well, it's just money, right?

I went ahead and chose to cut drain holes in the transom. I used the brass liners sold by Glen-L and epoxied those in tonight, pre-paint.

I also drilled a hole for the bow eye and beveled a platform for a flush fit. I also epoxied it into place pre-paint. I want these items well sealed, and I didn't want to screw around with making a mess on a VERY expensive paint job.

The skeg is fully mounted and sealed and my very next step is paint. My next pics should be of a colored hull.

Sure wish I could be on the water with the rest of you boaters this Memorial Day weekend. Patience... 8)

Around here Andy I would rather be building in the shop on Memorial day weekend then mess around with drunk idiots and crowds at the boat launch. Weekday evening dinner cruises with the help of daylight savings time are my favorite time to take the boat out.

Cant wait to see some pics with some color on that baby!
