Hello,

I have just started building the Tuffy. The frames are cut out and mounted together, and I'm ready to cut out the transom and stem, but on the transom I can't figur out have to read the drawing.
I have attached a picture of the transom drawing so you can see what I meen.
As I can understand, the outer "solid line" that I have indicated with red markings are the cut line for the inside of the transom, the "dotted line" is the outside of the transom witch will be tilted 12 degees of the cut line. So far I think I understand the drawings correctly.

What I don't understand is the distance between the inside bottom planking and the bottom battens on the drawing, I have indicated that with green markings on the attached image.
Can someone please explain this to me ?

Thanks fore any replies.

Morten, Norway

It may be the plans look a little odd due to the 12 deg cut needed and some fairing needs to be done on the frame members after the cuts are made and things start going together. There are some builder photos in the archives that may help you. Here is a link to one of them.

You are correct about the dotted lines and solid line. That is the same way my flying saucer was pictured. I am not sure why the difference is on the green marks you made. The planking is notched only into the inside of the transom and butts to the outside. The plywood then covers everything.

Good luck on your Tuffy Build.

I think what is confusing is the side frame members are shown full size and when they are installed, the back edge will get faired so that they will be even with the battens. You need a bit more material there so when the transom is tilted to the 12 deg angle, the front edge will be at the correct level with the battens and the back edge will be faired at the 12 deg to line up with the battens so the planking will sit flat.

I have not seen the Tuffy plans; but this looks similar to the transom on the Stiletto. The framing and the plywood on the transom were cut so that the battens and keel went all the way through and a transom cap was installed on the outside. In the same manner, the frames were not notched for the battens but were cut wider for the chines and the battens fasened on the surface of the frames. If this is the case, you will find a pattern for the cap in the plans. You will also find an article with a chart for determining the finished transom size on the top of the outboard plans page in the catalog. Another Tuffy builder could chime in an verify what needs to be done.
