Changing my name on the Glen-l forum

Post by jim Shadler »

Hi guys

After googling my name and seeing my forum posts, word for word, I have become uncomfortable (for lack of a better word) using my real name on the forum. I guess the wife was right AGAIN. So I will now be know as RETROMAN (because Im building a retro boat) if that is alright with you guys. i will also be posting from a different youtube account, as I have lost over 100 subs since I ve been posting boat videos. Can you believe that, the motorcycle crowd is a tough one. This is probably a forum first

thanks
Jim

Yeah, I did the same thing on a home theater forum I'm a member of. It was too easy to google myself and see those posts.

Oh, ok...well, I like Harleys AND boats...so I guess I am different!
Maybe they are "biker snobs"...

Guess you will have to put your boats on one channel and your bikes on another!

Steve

I am seriously thinking of going "off grid" ..kind of "Alaskan style"..if anyone wants me they can come find me...otherwise...I will just be a figment of someones imagination....It will take some time, but I am working on it!

They're just jealous because bikes don't float.
I'm also having second thoughts abot ever getting on a motorcycle (I hear we're not allowed to call them bikes anymore) again after watching the video on the news about the guy being rearended in Dallas. As insane as some boaters are these days it's safer to be on the water.

I went through the opposite transformation a few years ago on the Knife Network. As a serious knifemaker, it seemed inappropriate to use a 'screen name' for a variety of reasons. I wanted people to be able to search my name and be linked to my work and website as well as my forum posts as they were all 'academic' for the most part. Name recognition is big in that particular pursuit. So, I started using my real name.

I guess I saw boat building the same way. These are academic discussions involving the sharing of knowledge and experience (with a few exceptions). When I get to a Gathering and shake hands, I want people to associate me with my participation here in these forums. People using screen names will be harder to recognize unless they have it on a name tag or something.

I guess it all comes down to what you seek and what you have at risk. Identity theft is no joke, and if this kind of interaction has an impact on your business elsewhere..., hey, whatever works for you brother. :)

Perhaps the slowest Zip build in Glen-L history...

FWIW, the most effective way to have done this name change would have been to contact John B(The site administrator) and have him change the user name for your original account instead of creating a new one. This way all your original posts would have been associated with your new name. PLUS your original concern about your posts appearing during a google search of your name would have been eliminated. (as your old posts would now be credited to Retroman) As it stands right now your original posts will still appear during a google search of your name. Just thought I would toss this out in-case anyone else is thinking of doing the same thing.
