When you go to laminate the stem the plans says to have nails 4" apart. I was wondering what the best layout of these screws is? Do you nail from both sides? do you have 2 rows of nails or just one down the middle of the stem? If someone has a picture of their nail layout that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all
Joey

Joey,
You will want to stagger all of your screws for max. holding power, Both sides. Just don't put a screw too close to the edge that will be beveled, for the bottom planking. Make sure you perform this operation on a FLAT surface, this piece is important.

Joey, on my plans, it shows a layout of the fasteners on the stem.

Like Bob says,I would keep them away from the front edge which will be beveled and I would go from both sides.

the fastening schedule shows how far apart

I would put 2 on the ends, then start staggering the screws every 4 -5" apart. Like Upspirate said, check the fastening schedule. Have fun!

Got the transom knee and stem glued and nailed together. Now i have another question. The Bill of Materials states that i will need 4 pieces of 1"x6"x4' for use as the deck beams. However looking at the drawings i cannot see where pieces this large are needed. The deck beams i see on the plans state that they are only 1"x2.5" or 1"x3". I was wondering what i actually need for these deck beams and if anhyone has a picture of the beams.
Thank you all

Joey

Hi Joey,
I remember that when I was laying out the "deck beams", which are the tops of the frames, I believe, it took a full width 1x6 because of the curvature of the piece. I am happy to hear that you are started, and your idea of the mock up was great. When I'm building something at work, and am not sure how it will look or go together, I will always do a mock up. I have found this picture, look at the piece in the foreground, the one with the holes. You can see my layout lines if you look carefully. That is a piece of 1x6, well it's about 5 1/2" wide actually, that is one of the deck beams.

There are four deck beams that you need for the outboard configuration: a fu ll deck beam at frame 1, an intermediate deck beam halfway between that frme and the bow supported by an upright brace, one beam across behind the cockpit and another aft of the deck at the motor well opening. This does not include the dadshboard piece.I have one extra between the aft deck behind the engine compartment and the cockpit to allow for a 6 inch wide center deck through which I am routing my fuel fill pipe.
