Nice.

I think Bayou Bengal ran an old 18 Johnson at first on his Squirt

I ran a 1957 15HP. Your 18HP should do fine for you. On my boat which was 11 ft and heavier than it should have been (for a variety of reasons), the 15HP would push me along at just under 20 mph. On your 10 footer, the 18HP should get you up to around the mid 20's. And having the old motor on the boat really looks great.

Also, while I'm certainly not one of the more knowledgeable people on this board in regards to motors, I did learn a few tips and tricks about this genre of OMC motors and may be of help if you encounter problems with it. By the way, I still have the motor and will one day build something to put it on; probably a light and open little lapstrake fishing boat.

Did you convert yours to a single hose from the 2-line pressure tank? I'm debating doing this because I haven't found a lot of those pressurized tanks that are in decent condition. I googled it and found a few sites explaining how to do it that also said it was easy but I would rather leave the motor as it is.

The motor had already been converted when I bought it, but it doesn't look like it would be hard to do.

Well I'm back at it, sort of, it turns out the weather here in Michigan isn't quite up to my epoxy's setting conditions. Anyways, I just wanted to go over a few questions really quick. First, is there a preferred placement on the chine for the plywood to meet? By this I mean directly in the middle of the chine or would slightly higher be better, or maybe even neither. I noticed my line I drew on the chines are slightly different from each other so I need to adjust this. Second, since the two battens that stick out the farthest will have a light hump in them as they are bent down with the plywood, this means they need to be faired so there is no hump in the battens, correct? There's a picture if it helps. The red lines are suppose to show the bends.

My reply is backwards. Yes, the battens will have to be faired. You'll still have a slight hump in the hull, but you'll only notice it when you're sanding, fibreglassing and painting that area. It's very subtle, but part of the shape of the hull.

I'm not sure I'm clear on your first question, but basically, you're going to install the side plywood panels first and then the bottom plywood. The latter goes on top of the sides, which are flush with the bottom of the chine. Later when you're rounding the chine area off in preparation for fibreglassing, you'll be sanding or rasping the edge of the bottom pieces.

Let me know if I've understood you correctly.

Thanks for the response. For the battens, I have already faired them but wasn't sure if I was suppose to compensate for the bending or not, but it seems I will leave them be so the hump will become part of the hull. You also did answer my other question. Thanks again!

The Squirt has been flipped and I have the bow sub-decking structure dry fitted and am in the process of epoxying it. The coamings have been epoxied and fastened into place as well. That was one part of the build I wasn't expecting to be so challenging. I soaked the wood over night in water and got it to bend, but it's definitely a two person job. I'm still trying to figure out what I want the rear hatch to look like, and with what hardware I want to use. Also, since the boating season in Michigan only has a little over a month left, and I go back to school at the beginning of August, I'm going to save the decking for a winter project .

I would really like to purchase the steering system this weekend as well. From what I have seen, this seems to be the most common system used for the Squirt. I am using it with a 1957 Evinrude 18 hp, so does anyone know what types of fittings I will need or best way to go about this? I've seen two ways done.

Here are some updated pictures of my build.

Really like the lines!
