Hey guys. I have made my transom bands but the shortest screws I can find are 3/8 long. I dont want to run the screws all the way through the hull. What is everybody doing here? Also on through hull parts ie drains and bow eyes, would rtv silicon sealant (like what i make gaskets for the car with) work okay on this. If not what should I use to seal these areas?

Thanks

Hello Greg,
For the transom bands, I used #6 Sharx SS screws. Mine were 3/4" long and they went into the frame as you can see in the photo below. So there is no screw protruding through the hull. My transom bands are 2" wide and that transom and frame are also thick I used either Boat Life caulk or GE outdoor waterproof caulk to seal the holes. I placed a small dab onto the hole and then a small line of caulk onto the threads of the screws. The screws pull some of the caulk into the hole and the rest formed a seal on the hole in the transom bands. Mine were made by cutwaters.com

No screws are showing.

Ditto to what Jeff said. I also used 3/4" stainless steel screws and they go into the transom frames and do not protrude. I used the "boatlife" sealant on them as well.

If you dont have framework there maybe you could glue a laminate of wood that is thin enough to bend to the contour of the inside of the planking so that your screw goes into that and not just the hull side.
