Thanks guys/gals,
I lifted the boat (a few inches) off the building form today and blocked it. I then crawled/slithered under the boat and removed the building form. I also built a temporary trailer/cart to set the boat on once it is flipped. I guess I need to buy a trailer soon, though I haven't been searching for one.

Just one question regarding the sides of the boat. Below the waterline it is painted dark blue. Above the line, it is currently clear epoxy. After I build the decks etc, I will varnish the sides and deck at the same time. I also want to put a white boot stripe between the blue paint and clear epoxy (eventual varnish). What is the proper chronology for that? If I put the white stripe on (maybe paint, maybe pin stripe sticker) first, would I then varnish over the clear epoxy, white stripe and blue paint? Or do you need to keep the varnish off the white line and blue paint i.e. tape off the white stripe and blue paint and leave a tape line where the varnish would end?

Does that question even make sense?

File comment: the temporary cart. Maybe once the boat is on it, I can grab some oars and row around the garage!

Looks great!

On that cart, you might want to get another dolly fixture....it may be just a little unstable as a trike

You don't want to varnish over the white boot stripe. Varnish has some amber tint to it and will discolor your boot stripe. All my finishes, bottom paint, boot stripe, and varnish went directly over scuffed epoxy. I did the boot stripe last but had taped it out to prevent the varnish from being under it.

Completion is but one step in the process and not one bit more important than the others.

Your blue goes up pretty close to the bow, so if it were me, I'd put most or all of my bootstripe over the blue (roughed up of course).

Boat looks awesome! That paint is smooooth. 8)

Thanks for the advice, my boot stripe will follow suit. Today, me and three of my friends flipped the boat. Two guys in front, two guys in back, then a small game of twister with the boat in the air, and landed it on the cart. It sure looks different sitting up the right way....but it did bring a smile to my face when I looked at it for the first time! Hmmmm.....what to do now? Too many places to start.....

Congrats on the flip. Things pick up speed now, limited only by the amount of your free time.

I want to follow up on the primer discussion from a few pages back. The same question came up on another site of why Interlux is only recommending 2 part epoxy primekote primer instead of the simpler and cheaper one part pre-kote primer many of us have used with no problems. This is the answer I got from one of Interlux's dealers which suggested I use the pre-kote on my kayak bottom.

"The Scoop is, that Epoxy Primekote is a two part paint system. Two part systems give off an enormous amount of noxious odors. Dangerous fumes that should not be inhaled. Most of our builders are working in a basment, attached garage and some in their attics. In other words, in a space directly attached to the living area of their house. The two are a bad combination. Given that Epoxy Primekote is designed to eliminate the problems associated with Amine Blush but if the blush is cleaned off properly than it is not really needed.

So the long and short is, Pre Kote is an easy to use product that has served us, and our customers, well for many years. It is, in fact, recomended for use under Brightsides. The reason you are seeing PrimeKote recommended over clear epoxy, is to cover their rears if blush was not properly handled."

Yah, it is an interesting topic. I originally bought the prekote, then at the direction of interlux, purchased the primekote. I think the prekote was $29 and the primekote was $37, so the price wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things (the thinner for the primekote is more expense too, so that does add to the increase in cost of the finish). I do know for fact that the two part primekote stinks like heck and I would not want to use it in my basement. My workshop is detached from my house so other than when I was painting it on, the smell wasn't a big deal. However, the next day, the workshop still really smelled.

The single part prekote is a lot easier to work with, sands way easier, and hides blemishes better than the primekote. The primekote did appear to be a tougher/harder surface than the prekote.

Over the epoxy, I went primekote, prekote, brightside. Not out of necessity, but I already purchased everything. The prekote was a nice step though, as it did provide a very smooth, flat (like in flat house paint) surface for painting over.

I encapsulated about half of the interior of the boat tonight. Not very comfortable, being all hunched over. Maybe do the other half tomorrow evening.

I've used the 2-parts in the basement in warm/hot weather and left the garage doors open with fans overnight. Seemed fine. But, never in the winter.

Two weeks since my last post....unfortunately, not too much progress to report. A few deck frame members, but that's it...I think I will finish the seat back frames and strongbacks, then work on the floor. I also have created quite a shopping list....fuel tank, installation kit, steering system, control cables, more screws, more epoxy, more mahogany...
