sapelle as keel

Hi

My local wood supplier is out of white oak and recommends sapelle as a alternative. The wood is for the keel. Has anyone had any experience with sapelle?

Sapelle is fine. I used it for the keel as well as the frames for my Zip. I would have used sapelle also for the chine, sheer and bottom battons if my supplier had not run out of it. I used African mahogany for the chine, sheer and bottom batons. the sapelle was considerbly heavier and stronger than African Mahogany.

I am using Sapelle for my keel. I fiberglassed it first for extra abraision resistance, but I don't think its necessary to do so.
