Finally bit the bullet and after umpteen permutations and combinations got up the courage to attack my dash. I used a circular saw, a jig saw, a router, a belt sander and drills with hole saws and bits, it was nerve racking. A few photos of the final 'mock up', the rough install and the bare 'holy' dash. Cut off a goodly protion of the dash itself to the left and right of the switch panel.

One photo shows the 'jig' I crated to get my switch panel recessed into the dash so the switch panels face is flush with the dash, which took some patience! The speedo and tach have thin 'spacer' rings to make them a little more 'proud' of the dash, in keeping with the Air Glide compass that has been on two previous boats I've owned, one that wound up 6' under at our dock. I salvage the compass once I got the boat back up.

Drilled a blasted for the steering while I was at it, going with Teleflex NFB rack system. Cable lenght came out perfect.

Looking great. Sacry cutting holes in all your fine work.

Works for me. That steering wheel hole had me in a tizzy until it was done. The tolerances were a little too close for my comfort.

I really like the compass. Where did you find that?

Hi Chris,

The compass came with a used boat/motor/trailer package we bought for use at the cottage in Canada a long time ago. When that boat sank and had to be replaced I salvaged the compass and installed it on the new boat. Now it is time for that old compass to start a new life on the ZIP.

I also have an old Air Guide Speedometer that I wanted to incorporate into my dash, the photo is of one extensive laborious mock up that I regected, showing the speedo. If anyone is interested in the old speedo I will not be using it, be a cool feature.
