The frames kits are very labor intensive with little, if any, profit to be made from the target market. I was lucky enough to have gotten the frame kit for the Super Spartan at G4 from Jimmy 70. He had it for many years but decided not to build it. He's into guitars and mandolins now and maintaining his health. Having the frame kit really made this build a lot easier. Glen L really made some beautiful kits in the day. To bad that just isn't a viable venture anymore.

Roberta,

I think if someone lived near me, and was willing to buy the wood and drop it off to me, and then pick up a cut kit in 2 days later therefore eliminating me having to drive all over, ... I think it could be viable, ... but I wouldn't quit my day job.

Maybe Glen-L could just refer the local people looking for a kit to me. Then I can quote the cutting service, that is possible.

As you can see, .... I have been a busy little Beaver

It took 16 hours to cut a complete kit less the top decking. The biggest time killer is mapping out your pieces from the plans to the wood. I estimate a complete kit could be cut in about 6 hours if one had the templates made from .125" ABS plastic. Note to self:  ... Next boat, ... make plastic templates.

I glued the (3) Battens down last night in my kitchen, ... The weather was pretty bad, cold and raining. So I set up (4) sawhorses up in the living room and went at it. Reason being, ... I wanted to get the boat framed up this weekend and needed a good jump at it this morning. I have everything ready now for the side planking.

All the frame work has has the Mahogany corners rounded to a .125" radii to help prevent the wood splitting with age. They also have been encapsulated with (2) coats of West Systems Epoxy. Figured it would be much easier doing some of it now than all of it later.

Over the weekend, I was pretty busy with the Super Spartan and related stuff.

First I glued up the Chines and the Sheer's to the side planking. I then refitted all the parts in anticipation of the big glue fest tonight. This morning I re checked how all the parts fit together, and mocked glue the whole enchilada several times and found a few pieces could use a tiny bit of trimming for ease and speed of the big glue up tonight.

I literally had no room to continue with the build, so I had to clean out the Garage yesterday, ...NOW I have a little bit of room. :D If you look at a picture posted earlier, ... you can see a huge difference in my garage, ... Amazingly, ... it only took 11 hours to clean it, ...

Hey, ... she's starting to look like a hydro.

Bill

Roberta,

I saw on your thread that you notched the top frame pieces on your transom for the Carling's, ... it doesn't show that they get notched in the plans, ... was their a reason you did that, ... or were you just making busy work?

Thanks
Bill

The patterns do not show the notches, but if you look at the plan view you will see the notches. The carlings and coamings are notched into the upper frame members on the transom so that the end of the carlings and the bottom notch on the coamings nests into the notches and butt up to the transom. You need that space between the frame member and the motor board. It creates a better joint than just butting the carlings and coamings against the frame member. I think the notches are not shown on the patterns because of variances in nominal wood thicknesses. The width of the notch will be based on the nominal thicknesses of the carlings and coamings. Making the frame member longer allows for this so you don't wind up with a bigger notch than you have wood to fill it and you will be able to trim the frame member accordingly.

Ok, ... it's been a little while since I posted my progress, ...

Looking at the picture, everything is glued and 80% fared in with the exception of the coamings. In also dropped the coamings about 1" on the motor boards. As you can see in the photo, I did not notch the coamings in the front as this is were things start to deviate from the plans. Everything to this point has been built per plans so far.

Within the next week or so, ... you will see a difference from my boat to the stock boat.

I took my plans for the squirt to kinkos and had it scanned. Then imported the image, used tracing software and was able to output vectors to cut a frame kit on the CNC router. I can see where it would be cost effective to cut full size frame templates out of 1/4" MDF and ship them out via ups. Much easier than transferring from plans.

The frame work has been fared, the coamings were glued up last night and the Dash beam, supports and strong back have been test fitted and will be glued up tonight. Tomorrow, ... it gets flipped over to finish the bottom.

Last night, I fitted the deck framework. Their not glued in yet, but all the pieces are cut as well as the reinforcement blocks. I added some more reinforcement to the front, and I'm sure it wont need it, but the connections to the bow seem a little thin for my comfort.

I will glue everything up tonight and flip the boat tomorrow morning to deal with the bottom of the sponson's.

Regards
Bill

Looks Great!! I think the extra re-enforcement would be good if you were using linen on the fore deck, but with plywood decking it is very strong.

Thanks Roberta,

Linen or not, ... It really stiffens up the front end, ... Considerably! I feel much better about the thin connections to the bow piece.

Anyhow, ... I glued all the deck framing in over the weekend, flipped the boat, added the non-trip chines, and the rest of the sheeting to complete the bottom and last night, I removed all the clamps and fared everything smooth. I think tonight, I will sand the entire bottom with 80 grit and then flow out some epoxy to pre seal the wood., ... then flip her over so I can seal the inside before the decking goes on.

I sealed the bottom with 2 coats of West Systems epoxy. I sanded down only the sponson's as the rest of the bottom at this point is still resting on bricks with wood on top of them. Theirs no point in cleaning up the bottom yet, as it will just get mess up moving the boat around. I then flipped the boat and sealed the inside and all the longitudinal framework. I will give the inside of the sponson's another coat tonight.

She's getting there. I have the steering kit and the the Keller 200 Deadman throttle from Glen-L and am figuring out the cockpit layout. One thing, ... I think I'm going to add a wedge under the steering wheel to give it more of a horizontal angle instead of the slight angle according to the plans. I just seems easier to steer, and it appears it would be more comfortable.

Now, ... just a ton of sanding is in my future, ... :(

Question, ... What are people using for padding for the bottom of the cockpit area, ... foam?

Thanks
Bill
