Hi All,

It's been a long time since I posted as progress has been slow over winter, but here are a few more pics to prove that I am still going with my Zip build...

Added main deck beams / frames…

Added carlings and started on motor well frame…

Added some floor supports which also act to stiffen the hull battens…

I managed to get hold of a 1974 Johnson 50hp motor for a few hundred quid. It is meant to be 20" but actually measures 21" so I guess I will have to raise the transom an inch to make sure the cavitation / AV plate is in line with the bottom? It's quite heavy (193lbs according to Google) but should hopefully push us along nicely. It had been taken off the last boat with a grinder which melted the aluminium (aluminum) mounting bolts so I needed to drill them out and now the threads are shot. It also needs a bit of work to hook up the controls and I need a fuel tank and line too before I can test it. The last owner had the engine refurbed, so it has had a new head casket, new CDI, new coils, head skimmed, new impeller & housing, new stator, so hopefully should run ok…

Wife has told me she wants it in the water by next summer, so I'd better get a move on!!

Looking Great!!! The motor should be really nice when you get all the things corrected. Did your wife mean this coming "next" summer (2012) or next summer (2013)? If 2012, God help you.

Hi Roberta,

Thanks! Luckily the sun came out and the temperature shot up just in time for me to say that "next summer" definitely means 2013.

I had a long time off building the boat for various reasons but I've got a renewed enthusiasm, so hopefully can maintain some momentum. Your build is a major inspiration, although mine wont come anywhere close to your quality.

thanks again,
GeorgeD

Looks great, glad to see youre still progressing. Your build was one I poured over while contemplating taking the plunge myself.
