Mr John

Postby Lowka53 » Tue May 06, 2014 7:11 pm

:) I picked up a set off plans for Mr John last year and did some of the framing. So this year I decided to put the boat together I ordered in the electric trolling motor to power her http://www.fingerhut.com/product//MinnK ... s?cat=8925 it should work fine until I can find a good used 9.9 to run her with. I am building a temporary covered building area to put Mr John together after that I will use it to put my Jubilee frames together the shop is taking longer than expected to get through the red tape here. The Mr John is one of the less documented builds it being of very easy construction but it does make a nice dingy for larger boats there is nothing fancy about the boat but a well used small work boat.

Lowka that little boat would be just fine with 5.5-6 Hp.
A 9.9 is too heavy as well as almost TOO powerful for that little boat.
My opinions on these issues are based on lot's of terrible mishaps along the lifetime of learning what was the wrong thing to do!

 its rated up to 20 hp bud 8) Power: Oars or outboard motor to 20 hp.
Can the hull be extended or shortened? Yes. Up to 10% by re-spacing the stations a proportional amount. We do not recommend increasing the beam. per Glen-l  but if you notice i have a 30 pound thrust electric trolling motor on its way for it :D the wrong thing to do would be for me to buy a guy i knows little 12' 1960 vintage utility with the 110hp tower of power he has sitting on it. I have thought of buying it just for the motor but it is a 2 stroker and there is talk of banding them in Utah. The price is right though i can get boat, trailer and motor for 300.00  the reason I am thinking 9.9 they are very common here and cheap to come by and are newer motors. and well under the rating Glen-l place on the boat. 8)

I'm looking forward to following your build, Rod. I like Jon Boats. It's hard to find a more versatile boat in that size.

Last month I rented one with a 9.9 Yamaha in order to get the feel for operating a tiller-controlled boat... had never done that before.

Can't wait to see some pics of your progress!

8) it has been awhile since I have used one but they are very versatile boats. For the time being it will be used to fish some of the mountain lakes. I like the fact they are pretty stable for their size.

8) I got some work done today i finished the building form which is nothing more than a 16ft x 4 ft leveled table

After the John Boat is built it will be used to put my house boat frames together they are 14 ft wide by 4 four deep. I still have to build a temporary shelter over the building table.

Hey Rod, I'm glad to see that you can get some building in. Next to owning a cabin cruiser, I've kind of had a hankering for a smaller boat with a small outboard. Thanks for posting.

8) temporary garage is up. (My there must be a lot of unhandy people who reviewed this product they had all kinds of problems setting it up taking up to two days to put together I did it in a hour ) I need to add lighting and cooling to it miner time problems easy fixed with a trip to the wallie world. Rested today due to a long with getting things set up I am working in my garden and getting the building site ready for the shop, I had two large tree stumps that need removed I was going to grind them out but opted on a cheaper method and burned them out. of course this is time consuming and as about as exciting as watching paint dry. but to save myself from the powers that be :( :? I had to over see the burn.but things are going slow. should be able to set up the building pieces soon 8)
