Glen L Malahini

Postby 18shamic » Sat Mar 28, 2015 2:05 pm

Hey,
I am planing to start a Glen L this summer to use on Lake Erie. I was thinking about the Glen L Malahini, and i was wondering how difficult the build is, and how "Lake worthy" it is. I am worried about how a 16 foot boat will handle on Lake Erie.

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,
Michael Shade

The Malahini is a planning boat with a rather flat bottom (like my Zip). It will beat you up in rough water.

I would build something with a deep 'V' to better cut through the waves, but that's just my opinion.

Perhaps the slowest Zip build in Glen-L history...

I would not recommend a Malahini for use on the Great Lakes. I have one on a lake that is 7500 acres. It gets windy on our lake and on the weekends, it can be spine crushing and I just don't go out. Plus there is not as much freeboard as I would like on a lake that as big as Lake Erie. There are a couple of other boats in the Malahine size that have more of a Vee and more freeboard.

I am taking your advice, and am planning to modify the Malahini and somehow get a deep vee hull. I am not quite sure how i would accomplish this yet, but I am looking into Bob Smith's boat build, and how he did a similar build with the Rivera.

Thanks,

I would not try to modify the Malahini to make a deeper vee unless you are or have the help of a naval architect. I think you would be better off looking at other plans that are similar, like the Geronimo.

I would also recommend you include the spray rail, if in the plan. I added it to my Malahini and it helps when hitting waves and chop.
