Painting 61 Merc.

Postby cusoak » Thu May 07, 2015 5:31 am

Well I am in the process of refinishing my 61 Merc 45 hp motor
I have cleaned and sanded
Primed with 2 coats sanding between coats.
I have put on 3 coats of the Merc color for that year.
Now the question for those of you that have repainted a motor.
Clear coat over paint or not and how many coats of clear?
Jeff

There's no right or wrong. My Mark35A has no clear, the Mark58 I am working on does have clear. On the 58 I used a dedicated base coat/clear coat paint system from PPG and there was a narrow window of time within which the clear had to be applied after applying the base coat. If you do clear you need to know if the paint and clear coat are compatible! Some apply the decals and then clear coat for extra protection and shine. Good Luck whichever way you go.
This is my first, last and only boat build.

Thanks for reminding me that I have a '61 Merc 700 sitting in my garage waiting for paint, controls, and the elusive front cowl cover.

At least the decals are available on Ebay. :? :D

Jeff

What primers and paints are you going with?
