Squirt Chines - Dimensons

Postby WendellS » Sat Sep 19, 2015 9:35 am

The bill of materials specify the chine size as: 1"x 1-3/4"x12' (OR 4 pcs 3/8", 2 lams for each).

I am assuming the 1-3/4" dimension is a typo since 2 pieces 3/8" laminated will be an inch and a quarter. I'm just wanting to make sure before I start ripping wood. Please advise.

Also, I am kicking around the idea of building a 11' Squirt. If I go that route will 12' chines and sheers be long enough or do they need to be made longer to accommodate stretching the boat by a foot?

My apologies for what may be elementary questions, but I would rather ask than waste wood.

Thank you.

Good question. Wouldn't the 1-3/4" dimension actually be the height of the chine? And the thickness be 1" which is actually 3/4" net? Then two 3/8" is actually 6/8" which is read 3/4" making the thickness one in the same.

Thanks. I certainly showed my ignorance there and my poor, rusty fractional skills. Sorry to say it won't be my last brain disconnect.

No dumb questions here. Good call going laminated route on the chine and sheer, It's way easier than wrestling full size material

Two laminated pieces in theory should be stronger than a single piece. My chines are laminated but only because I needed 1 inch net thickness and my material is 13/16ths. I can see how you could get confused.

Go with the 11 foot stretch on the Squirt, you'll be glad you did.

You'll want to laminate both your chines and sheers using either 2 or 4 strips of wood. I expect the total length will be greater than 12 feet for the sheers for sure, the chines may be less even with the 11 foot stretch. If you go with 4 strips instead of 2, you can join approximately mid-ship with about a two to three foot overlap between the joints, this should give you fair curves.

Good luck with your build and we all look forward to following it and helping however we can.
