Virtual Zip

Postby gap998 » Fri Nov 13, 2015 1:10 pm

Got my Zip & trailer plans in just a couple of weeks - Really pleased!

Plans.jpg

What I'm less pleased about is the £18.21 ($27.73) in VAT to inland revenue along with £8 ($12.18) handling fee from the Royal Mail! Certainly ramps the cost of the plans a bit. Grrr - It's enough to make you want to dump a load of tea in the river!

Anyway, as I'm going to modify the stern of my Zip, I'm going to first model the Standard design on 3D CAD and then do the modifications to Transom & Frame 2 to get an idea what I'm up against. (See Barrel Zip thread - viewtopic.php?f=21&t=27137&hilit for rough model of what I'm planning)

I sure miss having access to 3D AutoCAD. It's a penalty of retirement. The amount of use I would get just doesn't justify the cost. But, I bet if I went back to the office they would give me access. NAAAY.

Form done - I'll add diagonal bracing when the frames are on.

And Transom - deck curve is remodelled for 20" Motor.

Frames on - I've rendered them as white oak for contrast but I haven't decided what I'll actually use yet.

Chines & Sheers - good thing about CAD, I can put them in place and then cut the notches after!

I could have created them ready faired, but I thought I'd get a better feel for the build by creating stock profile and shaping later.

Oh yeah - Happy Thanksgiving Americans!

It's Autodesk Inventor - I've used most of the major systems over the years. It's pretty powerful for the money & easy to pick up. You can lose months of your life just messing about with it though.

Ha ha - Ironically I'm having a bit of a nightmare fairing the frames - circular references apparently - Easier to get a jack plane in there!
