Where to find deck planking for squirt

Post by GiveATry »

I am nearing the point where I will be installing plank decking on my Squirt. I am Having some challenges finding mahogany in anything less than 1 inch thickness. Seems a lot of planing and waste to get to the thickness I need. Am I alone in this or have others experienced the same. Thank you!

I did the same. Bought 5/4 which I resawed and planed to 3/16.

I did the same except I used a bandsaw and then planed them all the same thickness. They ended up about 5/16" thick. I think Bill's 3/16" is I better thickness.

Resawing and planing thicker material is the most common way. You will have to do this or find a place that will do it for you. Some specialty wood shops might be able to accommodate you. For a smaller boat like the Squirt, 1/8-3/16th inch would be best.

I used D&D wood craft supplier, no complaints. I got exactly what I ordered.
I was able to order 12" wide mahogany for the curve of the decking.
Good luck and have fun, decking is my favorite part of construction.

Update and more questions... was able to install planking on the deck of the Squirt. Am reasonably satisfied with how it looks.

Need to add "caulk" to the gaps and want to stain the planks as well but am not sure what sequence makes sense. Can I caulk between the planks with a white pigmented epoxy and then stain without the stain discoloring the "caulk"? Or, should I stain first and then caulk running the risk that I will create a mess that I can't sand away because the planks are already stained?

I am struggling with how to move forward from this point.

Check out sscobra's Monaco thread in the power boat forum, he's doing exactly what you want to do.

Looking nice, I hope to be there someday.

Seems like the posts I've seen stain and finish boards first. Then tape over everything and caulk seams.

Do all you staining and coatings first. Caulking is the last step.

Try Noah's in Toronto I believe they ship to the US. They sell 1\8 African mahogany and it's not to expensive. Besides your dollar is worth at least a buck and a quarter here!
