I found mahogany close to my home for $5 a board foot. My question is are there any other woods that could work for the frames and other things? Can white oak be used for the frames? White oak is $2

I don,t see any reason you could'nt. Is harder than mahogany so it will bee a little stronger. Draw backs going to be harder to sand. I did not use it my build execpt for the keel.I you try to use for the chine and sheer you will have trouble in bending it around such a a short boat.I have used it in the rebuild of all of the frames in my 1966 Century Resorter.

White Oak is fine. Rough it up before glueing and do a good job sealing it.

Southern Yellow Pine is good, also.

WO & SYP are both heavy. But, strong.

Bill, I have installed white oak battens after planing on my Monaco build and noticed you mentioned to rough them up some. How rough to hold epoxy glue do you recommend?

Thanks,

80 grit is probably good.
