Don't know if this has been mentioned.

Gran Chillin', king of S&G, uses a dental syringe to form his filets, but for larger areas, use caulk tubes.

There are empty caulk tubes out there that you can fill with thickened epoxy to fill voids, make filets, apply to long pieces, battens etc.

I get mine from a fiberglass supply, much cheaper than West systems at West Marine, but I've heard you can buy cheap silicone caulk and just clean the tubes and reuse.

Mix the filler & fill the tube

Tap down to fill and to get air out

I forgot to tape off the area beyond the filet...if you do, you will have less to clean up later.

After I use the epoxy, I tap the flat end cao out with a metal clothes hanger ,then stuff some vinegar wetted paper towel in the tube, turn it around with a paint stir stick, push out with hanger again and stick point end and cap into a container of vinegar.Finish cleaning after fileting etc.Tubes can be re-used.

Oh yea, very important to dress for success...a Hawaiian tropical beach shirt to give inspiration to the finished build....vision of umbrella rum drinks on the beach, palm trees bikinis, skiff at anchor!!!  8) Jimmy Buffett or other Trop Rock on the radio helps the build too!!

STeve

OH yes...and lest I be accused of hijacking: that caulk idea is a good one!

I applied epoxy in a similar way with a ziplock bag. Nip off a corner of the bag and apply kinda like you see the cake decorators apply the fancy icing.

I bought 6 empty caulking tubes but never used them. A friend of mine was using them during his Squirt build and complained about all the hasle and mess it was. I ended up going to my local craft store, JoAnn Fabrics and bought empty clear catsup bottles. They were only $1 each and they worked great. Easy to fill, the plastic was very soft to squeeze and the mixed epoxy was easy to control.

One thing I forgot to mention....the epoxy is in a large mass this way,so you have to work fast before it kicks off.

Thanks for the great post! This is an excellant idea that I have not seen before. I like the Ketchup bottle idea too. Think I will be sending the Mrs. to JoAnn's today.

Caution on the squeeze bottles... If your mix is stiff and you put too much pressure, the whole lid may blow off and make a mess to clean up.

I know!

You know for most of us men going without shirts when working on boat projects is a learned skill too. This saves some of us money from the costs of waxing, which we can then spend on our boat projects. 8) Consider is a type of coupon of sorts.
