Has anyone ever used these?

I'm still planking, but will be 'fairing' the planking soon. There's some small dips that I want to be able to smooth out.
They're nothing major, and when you look down the lines of the boat, it looks smooth, but you can feel it in some areas.

These fairing boards look like they would be great for fairing out smooth lines. But the price tag of the board, plus the paper seems a bit excessive.
Just wondering if they're worth it.

I made my own and bought a roll of sand paper.

I thought about it, and would have no problems making a rigid one, but I'm more interested in the flexible one. Which I'm not sure how I would get the right amount of flex.

What did you make yours out of?

That was exactly why I built one. I used a 2 3/4" wide strip of 6mm Meranti about 30" long for the deck, glued a 1" x 2" x 2" block about 1/4" from each end, used a scrap 1" x 30" strip of oak as a handle, glued two more pieces of 1" x 2" x 2" blocks at each end of the handle, wrapped the contraption in sand paper and screwed the blocks together...works great and will flex pretty easily. If I had some thinner ply I might go as thin as 4mm but not any more so. I will draw up a quick sketch.

Yes, I do and you can build one also. But the paper they sell for this particular board is AWESOME. I long faired using the 220 grit and I exceptionally pleased

Thanks guys.
Not sure if I will build or buy. But I guess I'll give that green 3M paper a shot.
For $8 a sheet it better be awesome!

I see no reason to buy thiers plastic fairing boards.
Build your own from scrap wood. You can customize them to suit whatever particular fairing job at hand. If you want a hard straight line, you can use solid lumber . If you want a faired curve use thin ply or thin lumber. Make them as flexible as you require for the job at hand.
I used a lot of sandpaper from the flooring sanding machines. Hardwood floors have to be sanded from time to time, and that sanding machine uses large size sandpaper that I cut to size.

I agree with Kens, I made mine, bought roll sand paper from Klingspor and used 3M 77 spray to stick it to it!
