Any recommendations on a good boat cover that will protect my Zip during storage (inside) and that can be put on when trailering, but won't beat up the finish?

Roberta - I purchased a cover from Bass Pro that fit perfectly. However, I would not recommend traveling with a cover on the boat. If anything breaks free and starts slapping your boat in the breeze then you will have a big fixit job. I believe Bruce Dow had to redo his entire transom.

I agree, I had a small flag that hung on the luggage rack on the trunk lid of my Goldwing. I 50 mile trip of flapping and that super soft flag rubbed a spot all the way through the paint. All it takes is a little bit of dust and that cover could turn into 5000 grit sandpaper moving at 1000's of strokes a minute in the wind.

Driving professionally,I see MOST covers beating up the articles underneath.

Like I advised Bill Y a few years back,I think it's best to trailer uncovered, and clean the boat when you get there

I am actually really suprised that people are suggesting you don't tailer with a boat cover. I thought for sure it was standard proceedure to cover the boat no matter what during travel and storage.

I will be storing my boat under an enclosure... and I will not have any secondary cover during storage as I don't want to trap moisure or heat underneath.

However, during travel, I was thinking of muddy rain all over my instruments that might be a big job to clean. I was thinking of perhaps incorporating a 'snap' type custom cover for the cockpit area that would extend to cover the front winsheild. Just to keep the interior clean. Its not the water.. or dust... but if you've ever gotten caught behind someone pulling a load of straw bails down the highway in the rain.. its like a continuous wall of mud and crap flying at you!

Road rocks on my hull also have me concerned.. thinking about getting a 'rock guard' setup to help minimize the hits.

Now that I think about it more.. all those fiberglass jobies with covers... most owners probably don't care about 'cover' related damage. Not a lot of boats around here get much TLC from their owners... some do... but I think most just toss on a cover and leave it like that from season to season.

I have had "experience" with a cover on my Corvette and would never tow again with a cover. Way too much damage.

Maybe it will be done by G6 and maybe not.

I agree, no cover for travelling!!! Just thought I'd ask in case there was an option. I had planned on having some snap on cockpit covers made up, but I need to wait till all the hardware is on the deck to make sure it all clears. I'll get a cover for storage and to use when parked at gatherings to protect from overnight rains.

Mines from Bass Pro. But, no traveling. I have added cockpit covers that are suitable for running and towing.

I haven't had any boat damage from trailering with my cover.

But my (ugly, home-sewn) cover is very tight fitting. It dome snaps to my rub-rail, and it is "tented" between my front and rear lifting rings.

Last year, the cover had some damage from a freak gust of wind (that also put me, my car, and the boat one lane over!!!)

Everything inside the basic boat is "washable and drainable". But I do worry about losing things like seat cushions. And I often store stuff in the cockpit while driving. So I like Bill's idea of cockpit covers. That is what I plan to do. (It was on the docket for this summer, but I did not quite get around to it.)

I am not sure if I'll drag her "topless" down to G5 this year.

Thanks, Billy.

Everyone I talked to at a local woody show recommended against towing with a cover due to damage to the finish. I think the fiberglass boats have a more durable finish than our woodies. I've decided to just have some cockpit covers made for towing and get a nice soft cover for dust while storing.
