Fairing odd number of layers at the stem

Postby Tony Hain » Wed Sep 04, 2013 11:32 pm

I'm building a Tahoe 23'. It is cold moulded, with 3 layers on the side and 4 on the bottom. I have just finished the ply layers and about to give it it's final fairing before the layer of mahogany.
With the extra layer on the bottom it is not an issue until you get very close to the stem where the bottom and side meeting at the chine merge into the same plane. Here you have a step up of 1/8" from the side to the bottom
Question: So do I just fair away the bottom layer heavily feathering it back from the stem?

Perhaps I should of taken a picture!

I think I understand your question, however I built a plywood plank build.
I had a 1/2" bottom and a 3/8" sides, there was a lip at the forward chine section.
That where the spray rail goes.
Oak is over rated, everything about it takes extra time; then it warps, splits or checks !!!

Tony

Just do the best you can! Ken is right. Hide it with a spray rail. The plans say it is optional. It's not on the Tahoe. You will really want it.
