Trailer w/Keel support

Post by harveyb » Fri Sep 26, 2014 7:25 am

Hello Everyone,
My boat building mentor has advised me that wood boats require a trailer that supports most of the weight of the boat on the keel. Otherwise, he explains, that the bottom could become misshapen over time from the weight of the boat.
Can other members of this forum weigh in on this topic? Does anyone know if the trailer plans Glen-L has take this into consideration? I apologize if this topic has been addressed before.
Thanks,
Harvey (NJ)

I just rebuilt a trailer and put my boat on it. Four 2x6 bunks. The 2 interior bunks are close to the keel, but not directly under it. My understanding is as long as the bunks are under the longitudinals, you should be fine.
Honestly not even sure how you'd support the keel directly. Maybe with rollers? Although I've been told rollers are a no no for wood boats because they create stress points.
