Thanks George,

Ya, should be a new learning experience. I'm looking forward to it.

Wayne, there were 6 lifters, plus one person to position the blue wheeled pallets at the bow end that I'm using, one photographer, two reserve lifters in case and four other moral support people. I recall reading that Blake managed to flip his with just two people. Mine is perhaps slightly heavier with the bulwark and berth support installed.

Four extra large pizzas, a veggie platter, a case of beer and some coffee rounded out the direct attributable expenses.

Hope to see you get there soon.

Richard

I thought I'd post pics of a couple of the various mini projects I've been working on.

Fibreglassed the keel and chine with bi-axial strips cut from cloth and started fairing the initial fibreglass.

Worked underneath the boat for a bit putting in the expandable foam under the side decks. Managed to get 1.5 ft2 on either side. The remaining 5 ft2 will find a home in the aft and some location to be determined later. The expandable foam is pretty interesting stuff to work with.

ok, it looks like you are going to need to slow down on your build a little bit  you have got a lot done and it's looking good! i guess i need to order some expanding foam and get back to work!

I could use a break, but I'm hoping that in a couple of weeks it'll be consistently warm enough for me to start the fibreglass cloth.

Work fast with the expanding foam. The stuff I got gave you 45 seconds to stir and it pretty much starts expanding at 46 seconds. Also, just mix a little at a time. I mixed 12 oz of each liquid and then poured that. That gave me 3/4 of one ft2.

Good luck,

Richard

A couple of pics of my fairing and sanding. The workshop is going to need a major hose down after this is all done.

Has anyone ever reused the 3M balloons they've sanded off? I swept a ton of the stuff off the bottom of the boat.

Ya, hard to tell, isn't it? We still have some of the stuff on the ground outside.

As for advice, I'd say cover your face completely. It turns to a really fine powder and gets in everywhere. I'm even wearing ear defenders to prevent the stuff getting into audio crevices, plus I can listen to some good tunes to stay motivated - it's not fun, so something upbeat is good. A good quality and comfortable full-facial respirator is essential. I'm wearing an Army issue gas mask (left over from my previous life) and they're designed to be worn 24/7 for several days, plus nothing gets in. Finally, become a sculptor when you're applying the epoxy 3M bubbles and apply it as smoothly and exactly where you want it as possible, so that you don't have to do so much sanding.

I won't say: "have fun", but get through and onto more building later.

Cheers,

Richard

After countless hours of sanding and fairing, it felt great to get started fibreglassing the bottom.

richard............its really looking good....by the looks of yours, I'm being too fussy.....but hopefully this week I can get the balance of mine done....I'm sanding mine by hand, with a long board...., I took 4 days this last week and made a modification of the bed in our camper....I made it so one person can raise up the bed, with the assist of gas shocks....to access the storage w/o going outside..., so monday its back to work....got to clean up the shop first....lots of white stuff !!!
keep up the good work......have had a couple of e-mails from pete in oregon who has started the tugg-along 18..........so we now have 5 in progress...between the us and canada..

Hey Wayne,

You're really multi-talented. How about adding some of those features to the boat?

I think being fussy is probably a good thing during the hull preparation. Everything shows on a hull, so the hours of making it perfect are well spent.

I know there's you me, Kayakn and the fellow you're talking to with the 18', but who's the fifth tug along builder? It would be cool to see pics of their builds too.

Richard

speaking of options............I thinking of a solar panel or two..........and maybe A/C....since I already know how to install one......it would be a piece of cake.........( probably have installed 60-70 a/c units on boats) Wayne
