Some pics showing the completed primer paint. I used Epifanes two-part polyurethane. I applied one coat and then sanded the high-build primer heavily and this is the second coat. A bunch of dust landed on the hull when I opened the garage door - visible in the aft view shots.

Oh and the Tug has acquired a little friend to keep it company in the workshop. So I work on both a little at a time. Talk about having a "bug". Sometimes I think I'm nuts. But I'm enjoying the journey.

That grizzly grip stuff is pretty interesting. I'd never heard of it, but it should be effective, especially as an anti-slip coating.

I wish I had extra hours, Wayne. The new friend is a little Squirt. Once you start painting the Tug, it's just another 30 minutes to finish a Squirt. I gotta tell you, building a little runabout is a breeze compared to the Tug. Just the surface area alone is about 3:1 (translate that into sanding hours) and then they don't have a cabin. Still they're both so much fun. I figured the Tug would look cool with a little Squirt in tow.

I'm not doing a Squirt build thread, but I've been enjoying the many that are out there and learning as I go.

BTW, I did manage to find some extra hours to be down in florida last month for a conference. I got out to lake Toho near Orlando for some Bass fishing. Not sure if you fish, but it's great Bass fishing out there. Between my son and me we caught 7 beautiful Bass, plus one Bowfin. My son is now part of the 10 pound Bass club.

I'm interested to see the results of the grizzly grip. Keep up the great work you're doing.

Richard

Both boats are really looking good Richard :!:

I've used the spray in bedliner for anchor lockers and it's great for abused areas, haven't used it for exposed areas though. For non-skid foot traffic areas I uise and like Kiwi grip. It's some good stuff :D

Thanks George,

That's given me an idea - possible use inside the storage lockers out in the deck, for fenders and lines. I also wonder if it would be good inside the motor well. Will have to think about it.

Have you started building something, George?

gentleman..........I ordered grey, and white grizzly grip...today. Im going to use the grey on all floor panels, inside the seat areas/battery compartment/ and in the motor well..lower half. white for the upper half of the motor well/motor tunnel sides...also inside the bulwarks, on the upper decks, and the side walls...down to the floors...I plan on glueing carpet on the v berth floor/side walls...it should dress it up a little. I also plan on some type of hardwood flooring inside the cabin....in the walk areas........I expect the grizzly grip next tues or wed....they make it as ordered....so by next thurs I should start seeing results........Wayne

well... yes and no

I have built 6 boats so far, but the closest to a Glen-l was my son's tugboat bed that I based loosely on a tubby tug plans. I'll be building them anactual tubby soon I hope. Currently I'm building a cedar strip canoe and in the next week or so I'll be building another driftboat for a customer. Thanks to Tom Smitherman and his Knot-So-Fast I'm looking at building a slow family crusing boat which is why I keep browsing the tug builds

My canoe build is on woodenboat forum, nothing cool to follow on here for now...

Six boats? You're a serious builder or perhaps serial builder?

Smitherman's Tug is a nice boat. He's got the right idea too about travelling places in it. I'm not sure where you will eventually want to go cruising, but the Tug Along is exclusively a river and small lake boat, because of its flat hull design. She'll be very stable and steady on those flat waters and of course will only draw 6-7 inches, so shallow areas are very accessible.

Whichever cruising boat you eventually decide to build, good luck and have fun. I've had a great time.

Let me be honest and say that a couple of those six boats were just S&G canoes and one was a standup paddleboard so it's not like I built six REAL boats

I like the flat bottom of the Tug along for it's draft considerations, but I'm not sure how practical it'd be even on the lakes out here where we get evening storms with 2-3ft of wind blown chop and 40+ MPH winds. I'm not opposed to building more than one cruising boat though... :D

I'm not so sure that size makes a difference other than how long it takes to construct the boat. The Tug is pretty much a large canoe that uses the same methods, but more time and material. I think a canoe IS a REAL boat - you just get to enjoy it sooner.

The 2-3 foot chop would probably be uncomfortable with the Tug Along. If you chose one of the V-shaped hull Tugs, you would have a more seaworthy vessel for bigger waters.

I finished painting the anti-fouling using Petit Horizons. The laser level was indispensable. Now I'm ready for the flip back, which happens this coming Saturday. So far I have 8 sets of arms, but it'd be nice to have 10. There will be pizza and Canadian beer. If you're in the neighbourhood, feel free to drop in at noon.
