Well I had looked at this about two years ago and then forgotten about it. Yesterday the old guy walks in and says "nobody wants it so you can have it if you still want it." What is it? A 1962 18 ft higgens Mandalay Runabout. 100% complete but in need of a complete resto. What could I say? The motor is seized (old 312 interceptor) but the wood is as sound as the day she was built. Has been stored in a barn since 1969. Wife shhok her head and said what about the one you are building? As if a guy can only have one wood boat!!! I said this one is for you honey!

Cool Barn find!!

Matt might like to do an article on this if you are so inclined.....they like barn finds/restorations.

If you don't know about his daily woodyboat blog website:

Well this Higgins is a plywood boat. Kinda right up my alley so far. I see it as a good thing to take apart and see how they did it as far as water intake location, how the engine is set up, how exhaust is run, yada yada yada. I am sure it will help me fill in quite a few blanks on my monsoon. I know that they are not the same boat but they are similar. Anybody know of a good source for Interceptor marine parts?

Got a call a few days ago from the son of the old guy that I got the boat from. He kinda accused me of having taken advantage of dad. I have been having a bad case of "junk collectors" remorse and wondering just what am I going to do with a third boat anyhow so I hooked up the old Higgins and towed it to where the kid worked and left it in the parking spot next to his pickup. I bet he was suprised when he came out from work! I know he was trying to work some money or who knows what out of me. I feel a huge weight lifted from my shoulders. Sad thing is I bet nobody ever does anything with that old boat and it would not be too hard to restore. I bet it could be done in a year easy!

I understand. I does not feel right if the gift is given with any kind of aprehension.

Still, I bet the reason 'dad' gave it to you was because he knew you would treat it right and do something constructive with it. Now, they have to find someone else, if they can, or do it themselves.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. If it is meant to be, then it would feel that way.

You did the right thing. I have done similar. On with your build and don't give it a second thought.

I would especially love to see his face if he was only trying to scam some money and had no actual interest in the boat itself.

 Yep, it sounds like he was definitely trying to work you for some $$. If he really wanted the boat and was the type who would follow through with the restoration, his father would have given it to him.
