At some point I intended to make my own cutwater, but to move the project along I put on a strip of 3/4" rub rail to act as a poor man's cutwater. It will protect the stem, but it doesn't have the same classy look or cover some of the construction marks like a full cutwater would.

Since I have a bow eye, I just used two pieces, one below and one above.

this is exactly what I'm going to do on my skiff to protect from the trailer roller.

However, I'm going to use one of these, cut in the middle as they have finished ends for the top and bottom:

I have the tolls to cut and dril/countersink cleanly though.

The rub rail will certainly be serviceable and doesn't look bad. Based on all the feedback, I'll defer the whole cutwater issue until at least the fall. I'm at the point where I want to "get'er done!"

To paraphrase Johnny Cochrane: " If the rub rail fit, you must use - it." ;-)

I am in the final stages of fitting and attaching many of the pieces I made a long time ago. The floor boards were made last Winter, but I need to do final fitting and attachment.

The floor panels are in two halves for ease of placement. I cut a shallow rabbet on each side of the center joint and will use a strip of maple to cover the seam. This will get screwed into the center floor batten. I also plan to use a couple more SS screws with a decorative washer to hold it in a few other places. The maple is not yet finished, so it looks white. With epoxy and varnish, it will match the thinner maple strips on the panel.

The same plan holds for the front panels. The admiral commented how you can see up into the bow and it was ugly. I may have to put a panel across frame 4 to finish off the front.

I also fit the plywood panels for the interior seating. I started another topic to discuss the best method for attaching these. The fact that they get upholstered limits some of your attachment options.

These are now epoxied and I am hoping to get the boat to the upholsterer next week.

Bob,
That is going to be amazing when you're done. I just realized that you have a double cockpit config w/o the pass through. My backseat is easily wide enough for three adults. So I have to assume you have room for six total, is that correct?

Without the pass through I should be able to hold 6 adults. It will probably be a little tight. The back seat is a little narrower than the front, but if your back seat holds three, I'll definitely hold 6.

I just called the upholsterer who was recommended by someone I know into boats. I had taken my boat to him last fall for advice on configuration. Bad news! With Spring upon us and everyone back into boating, he is booked through July 4th!! :-( :-(

I guess I should have scheduled a slot in advance, but with a build, you never know when you'll be ready.

I have a few other contacts to call, so now it is on to plan B. I can't wait that long to launch the boat.

If he has the quality and price you want, you can always go with throwable type IV PFD cushions or other temp cushions to use the boat till he fits you in

Still having upholsterer issues. Broken sewing machine and waiting 2 weeks for parts. Tried another and she didn't return my call. A word of advice: Plan your upholstering well in advance and get a time slot reserved, especially in the Spring.

I applied the rub rail last night. I used 1" vinyl chrome body molding designed for auto work. It comes in 24' rolls and has adhesive to hold it in position. Here is how I put it down. You pull back about 8" of the red adhesive protective strip and attach the molding. Then you keep lining up the next 8" and pull out the red protective strip as you go. The adhesive holds it in position. The chrome is covered with a blue protective covering in this picture.

This shows the process at the rear of the boat. Then you peel off the protective covering on the chrome and voila: instant rub rail.

This picture includes the box of the auto trim if anyone is interested. I bought it from R&E Paint. (Thanks Bill for the link. )http://www.repaintsupply.com/default.cfm

Here is the long view. I plan to reinforce the attachment with SS screws and decorative washers spaced along the rail, but I am going to wait until the boat cover is fit. I want the snaps for the cover to be along this rub rail so I will space out the screws between the snaps.

The upholstery thing must be universal. My guy took two months and that is after I paid him 1/2 and dropped off the seats.

That rubrail is just too cool. Very clean looking.

How durable and protective is it? Can you hit it with your fist or tap it with a mallet and not dent or deform it?

How did you apply it at the bow?

I'd be interested in seeing how the ends terminate.

The molding is solid vinyl and pretty tough. I put a piece on the floor and hit it with a hammer and it does not show a permanent dent. The blow, however, did put a scuff on the chrome, which is probably mylar tape bonded to the vinyl. It also cuts pretty easily with a sharp knife. It will be interesting to see how it will look after a season of use.

To terminate the trim at the transom, I made a small mahogany batten that covers the deck seam along the transom and extended it out past the side of the hull. I shaped this to match the profile of the vinyl trim which then butts to it. Here's a picture:
Attachment:
Img_0870-2.jpg
Img_0870-2.jpg [ 183.81 KiB | Viewed 144 times ]

At the front, which is where I started to apply the trim, I used two short pieces of the trim to experiment and fit a miter cut. I then transferred the cut angles to the actual trim pieces and applied. I should have been more careful because the joint is not the best:

I believe you could cover this joint with some chrome tape available at auto stores to make it look better. However, even if the fit was perfect, I was concerned about damage to the tip, so in the back of my mind I had always anticipated adding some protection. To do that, I used a short piece of hatch trim (which I bought to make the transom bands) and shaped it to match the bow curve and sheer line. This will get screwed over the trim at the bow. (Sorry for the fuzzy picture. )
