I have one of these for my crackerbox but I'm not sure what way to face it, if it faces forward will it act like a scoop and force too much water into the engine and if it's the other way round will it suck water out at high speed :? is this the wrong type for a powerboat should I just use one of the flush open hole types. Cheers

Exactly the same one I have. Face it forward. You need the positive pressure . Secondly PUT a strainer on the line.

Most folks here will confirm that some lakes (aka Nickajack) have things in the water that will be picked up. You don't need those things getting to your engine. Nickajack has a lot of milfoil. There leaves are about 1/8th wide and easily picked up. My strainer kept my engine safe. One gent was not so lucky and sucked a bunch up. It locked things up until he could clean it out.

I'd much rather clean a strainer than try to clear a hat engine or replace an impeller out on the water.

Further to this subject there is an excellent article on sea cocks in the February edition of "Wooden Boat" magazine. #224

Cheers guy's I was just afraid that a boat doing 50-60 MPH :D would force too much water in the scoop.

I would think that several of us would have already blown our engines if that were the case.
