Re: Aussie Belle
Hi,
Have finally got the back end sorted out and the sanding of the frame complete....
Today I cut a pile of ply with a 30 degree angle into various widths..4, 5 and 6"...
and have started with the first layer on the side..
.....
I am happy with how it went and hope that I get a bit quicker....

Cold mold is slow! don't get carried away being too neat on the ply layers. Keep moving. Wipe of excess resin to reduce sanding! You might want to get some raptor staples or brads. They are plastic and you can sand them or break them off.
Wish I had known about them when I built mine.
Be sure to mark your batten and frame locations as you go. You'll need them on the next layer!

Keep dreamin!!!
It is slow painstaking work. Take some advice and clean up inside very carefully as you go (Methylated spirits) to save you much agony later. On the second layer my staples were punching through inside leaving little craters, not sure how you avoid it but try if you can to keep the inside surface nice.
It is really cool when you close in that last piece.
Enjoy!

Re: Aussie Belle
Hi,
I have made a bit more progress on the ply lams.... I think I have it sorted out now with how many I can achieve and how big a batch that I need to glue.......
Bill,
The old man (Old aussie) and I are looking into a Raptor I did know that they were around but have been looking for a distributer over here...
Vette,
I have limbers also cut alongside the frames also, just a bit hard to see in the photos...they are'nt as big as the ones across the back though....

Re: Aussie Belle
looking good!
a few lines to mark the longitudinal bits and the frames so you don't blow thru with the staples and you are good to go with the other layers. never bothered to put blocks under the staples except for the strake $$ layer. easy to get a flattened nose end nipper on them and pull

Most people alternate the direction of the diagonals on each layer.

Re: Aussie Belle
Thanks Billy,
got plenty of sqaures cut and they do make it alot easier to remove (place an old chisel under and pop them off).
Bill,
Confused by comment about alternating the layers??
I did look at the photos again and I guess they do look a bit like I have started a second layer!!
But they are still the first layer at the back....be a few weeks before I am looking at the second lams!!!
Thanks for the comments guys....
Off to the shed to pull staples!!

Hi,
Have had a few busy weekends doing other things (Family, travel etc).
Got down to see my dad's boat OLD Aussie.....
Got a bit done today and am happy with how things are looking....
Have set myself a goal to achieve each day with the laminations..

Re: Aussie Belle
Looking Good Jamie, sweet lines, love that tumblehome
As suggested, very important to mark your batten lines on the ply strips as you work along your boat. You should be able to use your staple holes now to find your batten lines but I used a felt pen to mark batten lines (to enable sanding without completely losing the line) and had very few fixings that missed the batten when fixing the second and third layers.
Hope this makes sense, Tim

Re: Aussie Belle
tumblehome is the rounded shape at the transom....specifically how it curves inward at the deck
Re: Aussie Belle
A tumblehome is also a prefabricated home (mobile home) in a twister.what is a tumblehome

seriously...your work looks great! Keep it up. BTW, your shop is wayyyyy too clean. Where are all the crunched up beer cans, saw dust, blood spots, and epoxy pucks?
