Muffler or Not, That is the Question.

Postby Bill Edmundson » Wed Mar 01, 2006 10:03 am

I'm building an inboard runabout. I'm going to use a 125 hp diesel. I'll be in and out of a condo/marina. I've seen pictures both ways. I don't care to be loud. I'm told the Yanmar I've picked is "quiet". The muffler in the West Marine catalog is so large it would be a problem.

Bill,

Based on the information you provided and looking at the Yenmar website and the 125hp JH series engine I would say no muffler as they claim whisper quiet engine operation, you also seem to imply that you don't have the room for one anyway. I tried the poll but nothing happened when I clicked No.

Thanks for the comment, Matt.

A little more info:

This boat is mid engine with a cockpit behind the engine.
Exhuast is 3" at the engine.
A single muffler would be 5" pipe w/muffler 11" dia. x 30" long.
Twin mufflers would be 3 1/2" pipe w/mufflers 8" dia. x 23" long.
Or, twin muffles 4" pipe w/muffler 8 3/8 " dia. x 17" long.

That's a lot of real estate at a point where the boat is about 5' wide inside.

BTW, Matte: My next project is now a console skiff. Thanks alot!

So Bill could any of those options work if you only have 5 inches of clearance? My thought is if you don’t need it as Yenmar suggests why spend the extra money and aggravation. Good Luck what ever you decide.

Matt

I'm probably not going to use one. But, I'll try not to block myself out. So, if I change my mind later I won't distroy the boat.

Thanks for the input.

I believe that when Yanmar says "quiet" engine, they really mean it is a quiet diesel as compared to a Detroit , Caterpiller, or industriel Cummins. Quiet meaning quiet valves, quiet diesel injection and combustion. I still think the exhaust note could not be made quiet without a muffler.

If you are running a "wet"exhaust, don't worry about being to loud. I have a 283 Chevy in my Ski King with 3" diameter pipes and use no muffler. The water passing thru the exhaust does a fine job of muffling, in fact I was disapointed in the sound level. I like-em to be heard....Dwain Colton, AKA, Skiking.......

Dwain & kens,

Thanks for the input. As you can tell, it is about an even split on the question. When I mentioned a muffler the dealer looked at me like I was nuts. He said if I did use one that I should go up a size on the exhaust. They would check back pressure at sea trial.
