Stem, breasthook, transom knee...

At this point, I'm pretty much done with the full size plans.
Pretty soon will be time for the form, and getting something boat shaped in the garage. :D

Form finally done! :)
(not exciting, I know)

Took quite a bit of work to get the whole thing level, plumb, and square. (the 10 1/2 foot stringers weren't perfectly straight, so took some work to coax them into place.)

Shouldn't be long now before I have something somewhat boat-shaped sitting in the garage. :D

I'm only a month or so ahead of you and yes, it is exciting. Oh, just wait until you hang some frames.....you'll step back and see her in the water...in your mind :D Like I always did on my airplane builds, do something every day, even if it just think about the upcoming steps.

Congrats! And it doesn't get any less exciting as you go along and hit new milestones.

I got a big, fat, sh*t-eater grin after putting on my boat's name graphics on her transom this weekend.

Every step brings your vision closer to reality. Not many things more rewarding in life than that feeling.

Starting to take shape! :D

Only frame #3 and the stem are permanently attached at this point. But it's nice to see it start to have a shape.
Plus I was really happy to see that things are lining up and leveling out nicely. I had some question marks in my head when just looking at the individual pieces, but they're all falling right into place (so far).

Got the keel on.
Image

Only the inner layer is glued/screwed in place. I haven't been able to glue anything for the past few days due to this sudden cold spell. :x
Waiting for it to warm up, or for the portable heater I ordered to arrive.

In the meantime, I ripped up all the battens and chines. I had forgotten how much 'fun' it can be to rip 16 foot boards. :?
Of course, my math was a little off when ordering, and I'm 1 board short(for the sheers). doh!

Put the chines in place, just to see how they'd look/fit.
Decided they were way too stiff as is.
Knowing how easily white oak can take to steam bending, I took the opportunity to "steam bend" them in place.
Image

I know, technically, that's not steam bending, but I figured the towels in boiling water method was close enough.

Chines after "steaming":

Not perfect, but definitely help make the bending easier.

Then I used somewhat of a Rube Goldberg to get the chine into place for cutting:
Image
Consisted of the bar-clamp "trick" to get leverage on the chine, and then a 25 pound weight on the bar. The weight could be slid back and forth to get just the right amount of twist, and then locked into place with small spring clamps. Then I used a band clamp to pull the chine up and into position.
Worked pretty darn well... :)

Well, now that the holiday madness has past, I've finally been able to get back to it.

Got the chines and first layer of the sheers installed.
I also installed some chine blocking and some small gussets where the chines meet frame #3. Maybe overkill, but there seemed to be so much stress in the chines up front, that I wanted some extra reinforcement.

So I'm all ready to laminate the sheer with the second layer.
I was planning on doing both sides at the same time... until I realized that just one side was going to use a majority of my clamps.
