trisailor,

Beautiful boat! Thanks for posting the photos--look forward to seeing more! Ken Hankinson wrote an article about trailers that may shed some light on this subject:
http://boatbuilders.glen-l.com/1005/build-your-dream-boat-17/

Hope that helps...

How long are you waiting between varnish coats? How are you applying the varnish? Sanding between coats? It won't be long now. Better get those oar locks installed !!! Looks great Dean....... Neel

Hi Neel- from the product description: "Epifanes Wood Finish Gloss varnish works especially well on Teak wood. No sanding between coats is required. This is the perfect alternative to traditional varnish as it eliminates all that sanding and repetitive care."

SO, I figured, for the initial grain-filling portion part of the job, this would the clear ticket. Brush it on. Wait 24 hours or until dry, then brush on another coat. NO SANDING between coats! (maximum wait time between coats is 72 hours) The fourth coat, which I will apply today, will be the traditional Epifanes gloss varnish. Wait 'til tomorrow or the next day and I will then carefully sand the surface smooth and flat. I say carefully, as all exposed wood colors are a stain and I want to make sure I don't sand into (or through!) that layer.

Then I will SPRAY another coat of Epifanes Wood Finish Gloss varnish, followed by a coat of Epifanes Clear Gloss varnish. Sand that.

Repeat that cycle one more time.

Then spray on my final coat of gloss varnish and call it a good time.

At least that's the plan!

Then it will be time to put the boat back together. So far, I really like this product.

Bought a decent 2 1/2" badger hair brush. Between coats, I keep the brush suspended in a covered can, filled with kerosene past the bristles. Rinse the brush 3 times in mineral spirits before and after varnish. Fast clean-up, no dust problems resulting from a dried out brush.

I have 2 sets of bunks, one set is bow bunks, the best trailer I ever have. I wouldn't have a trailer without the bow bunks.

trisailor - what are you using to spray on your varnish?

hi kens- could you snap a pic of the trailer if you get a chance. what frames do each set of bunks sit on?

Dave- I just spraying with a Porter Cable gravity HVLP gun. Nothing fancy. Done a LOT of spraying with it. This will be my first time, however, with varnish.

Should need be, my back-up will be a Graco HVLP turbine unit. Haven't used that one in a while. It puts a fair amount of heat through the large air hose, which for varnish, shouldn't be too bad. But it lays down a nice layer of product. I'll keep all informed.

I have that Graco turbine unit. I used it on water based poly full strength and was quite impressed. I have not tried the varnish thru it though. Should be an interesting exercise. Let me know

I got my trailer from ACE Trailers out of Florida. Mine looks like all the others on his website. Here is a link to one;

My boat is here, you can see my trailer in some pics:

I have double bunks also. They seem to give good support. The only problem I have is that the closest the rear bunks can be spaced is 4 feet. The Tahoe's transom is only about 5 feet. It is difficult to center.

moved the boat off the building bunks onto the trailer (or at least the frame and one set of bunks) looks a lot different sitting on that trailer.

OK, it's on the trailer, time to move it around 180 degrees in the shop, so the boat comes out bow first
