 Sometimes boatbuilders have to search the world for friends. But, the ones they find are good ones.

As to C & C. Keep a recliner and a fully stocked small beer refrigerator next to your boat. You'll need the recliner because the number of "head scratching" moments you have ahead of you after the flip can be downright tiring at times. I'm not recommending that you drink all that beer, but you can never tell what friends from what part of the planet will drop in on you. You'll want to be prepared! (right Neel?) But this is when the fun begins.

now it's time to figure out a hinge mechanism similar to a truck hood hinge, lifting away and up, using a gas shock to keep it up.

Dean; If you search back on my early (maybe a year and a half ago )...I'll try and find it later ) you'll find one of my first posts in response to someone looking for a set-up of hinge hardware to lift up and then tilt. I think Bill Edmonson actually loaded the pics for me as I couldn't figure it out ( still can't  )
Basically I used long arms so there were two pivot points, one near the bulkhead, the other closer to the middle of the hatch.

thanks Doug! Those earlier posts with drawings plus the reference to the Sachse Rod Shop has my brain rethinking how the hatch hinge will work.

ain't this forum great??

Dean, I am using hood hinges out of a 1982 Chevy Suburban. They are really heavy duty and lift while swinging the hatch up. They also come with a massive spring that should be more than adequate to lift and hold the hatch up when fully opened without using gas lifters. I got a pair of them on ebay for about $50.00. Give that some thought......Happy New Year,,,,,Neel

Decided to drop in my parts engine again, this time with manifolds, so I can start to figure out the copper pipe exhaust path back to the transom. Also in the start stage is the dashboard layout, the shift and throttle lever locations and mechanisms.

File comment: the engine looks a little lonely in there, all by itself. soon the rest of the space will have batteries, cables, wires, filters, oh, so fun. it'll be great to see the other rebuilt engine in there soon.

Hi I"am new to this site and also live in MN I'am trying to decide what boat build to take on and like the style of boat you are working on just wondering if it is your first and the difficulty level of it, and any other info you could add. Thanks for any help.

Hi DHB- my first boat was a 26' trimaran sailboat I launched in 1999. The construction was fiberglass over cedar strip. It was a 3000 hour boat. This is my second boat, which will have a lot less time in it. I've been building stuff all my life; it's what I do. The Gentry certainly has had some challenging moments, which for me is the fun of it. I would not recommend this as a first project, if you possess minimum fabricating skills. One of the reasons is the hull shape has quite a bow flare which morphs into almost a barrelback stern. You are asking a lot of wood that doesn't want to be told what to do. A lot of coaxing is required. Don't get me wrong. I'm having a blast building this thing, but I'm glad I didn't try it forty years ago. There are three Gentrys currently under construction with active posts being made on this forum. Take an in-depth tour of the other two and see the highs and lows of Glen and Neel, as they've gone through the process. I believe both Neel & I will be in the water next summer, and Glen (down under) will be in for his summer as well. Just my thoughts. Good luck.........d
