Hi i are building 21 foot riviera and will be using it commercially .
I have had some set backs and some one mite help me solve them.
propeller shaft : 316 stainless steel will be 40mm in diameter
: 2205 grade stainless steel 37mm
rudder : the shape of the rudder but the stock has to go 2/3the depth of the rudder but can be tapered.
[ what is out there , the stock has to be 37 to 40 as well ] will this play with my steering , speed etc
the bronze must be 70 manganese bronze
the boat is getting surveyed as i are building it but the surveyors dont give me shapes just what grade to use and i have to fill in the blanks and show them and they say yes or know come figer
Has any one done this before or can help thanks simon :? :( :(

Simon - Where are you located?

The size of the shaft is slightly larger than 1.5 inches which is HUGE for a Riviera. It is not an issue but you will have to match our strut, bearing and coupling to it.

As far as the rudder. If I underrstand you correctly, you are stating that the requirements are that thickness of the shaft must carry down thru the rudder at least 2/3,. So if the shaft is 2" thick then the rudder must stay 2" thick down 2/3rd of its length but tapered down and out. OK. That is MONTROUS for a Riviera. It will not cause a problem with steering, etc but is sure is big.

These are dimensions for much larger boats with much larger power.

Please confirm with your surveyor the requirements. The boat will weigh only about 2800 lbs. I don't know what engine you are planning on using but 300 HP would be max. A large shaft would be 1.125 inches. The typical commercial rudder would have a 2" shaft with no more than 1" on its leading thick edge. And these are the dimensions used in the competitive water sport market that requires high performance and safety.

But if that is what your local requirements are then that is what you have to do.

I know there are folks on this forum that have used some of the larger equipment and will speak up shortly to give you a list of companies to call for the products.

I used Glen-L and Discount Inboard Marine for most of my drive train hardware. Gayle might know of some companies with these sizes. Call Richard at Discount Inboard Marine in FL. I know they can help lead in the right direction. They have access to a lot of products not listed on their website and have their drive shafts made to order. I know he can help.

Great looking boat. The bow has more the old style configuration with a straight stem rather than a more sweeping stem. The cockpit configuration is characteristic of the Monaco layout. Incidentally, the Monaco and Riviera are essentially the same plans with a different cockpit configuration.

My wife had "suggested" we offer the same services here on our lake. There is a lodge that has a Hackercraft reproduction. It uses their boat for what the call "champaigne cruises". There are 90 minute cruises on the boat. The clients get a bottle of champaigne to enjoy in the rear cockpit while on the cruise. The package costs $150.

With good marketing you should be able to have some fun with it.
