I am looking into building a Houseboat. I live in Michigan and we have lots of great inland lakes and rivers we can use. I would also like to have it versitile enough to go on the BIG LAKES so we can take the occational trips to such places as Macinac Island. I like the idea of the delta q or quest... I am looking for idias as to what boat or design type would be best for my wants. Trailerable and big enough for my family.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi, I am the other builder of a Delta-Q. I build outside so it is taking me longer than normal. Presently I am putting in the rear bunks and have 2 gas tanks, a water tank, a holding tank and a white water tank installed. Within a week I will get my rear windows and start on the walls. I live on the North chain of lakes in Coldwater. Would be happy to supply any info you would like.

Thanks Guys. jcallends, would you take your delta q on the big lake? or do you think it would be too small? Also where do you go about getting the wood around here to build these boats. Obviously you can't get the quallity you need at home depot.
Thanks

P.S. How to do you send a pm? I can read the ones sent but cant find how to reply or send a new one

I would but I would keep a close eye on the weather. You are right about Home Depot and quality, I started out with white oak for the framing but my supplier got unreliable and I had to change or stop building. Against all advice I started using treated pine lumber. In my experience I have found it to be a very good choice. While lacking the qualities of white oak it is easy to work with and I get excellent epoxy bonds. If I had stayed with oak I would have to go to Johnson Lumber in Charlotte and thats about 50 miles. Unless you have unlimited funds a lot of things are a trade-off, cost vs. quality, in a boat build. In this blog some people believe only the best of everything should go into their build. Since best is a comparative word then the next thing is which is the best and it goes on and on. I have been getting most of my lumber from Menards but I have to drive 25 miles, north or south. My last few trips to Menards make me think that they are getting their supplies the same place as Home Depot. Locally it's Legg Lumber, also a chain, but not a discount house. Quality lumber with a corresponding price. A house boat requires a lot of things you don't normally find in a pleasure boat. I like to think of my build as a travel trailer on a hull. My location here in southern Michigan is an advantage as there are many RV surplus dealers within 75 miles. My two, 24 gal, Moeller gas tanks and my holding tank all new cost me a total of $150, the tanks alone are probably worth $150 each. That dealer is in White Pigeon about 30 miles. Let me know if you have any other questions about the Delta-Q.
