Ok so I want to build Torpedo.....What's the highest reasonable HP you can put in her? And what should I expect in performance?

The Torpedo is a brand new design and was added to the site within the last several months. I've heard that a few plans have been sold, but I've not seen anyone start on one yet. In the description, it states an engine up to about 5.6L or a 350 cid engine. I think that should actually say a 5.7L engine which is your typical GM 350.

It's a new design :!: So, there is no experience base. But, lot's of our builders will come in. I think your limit will be real estate to put the engine in.

I hear you about the 5.7 liter engine... But what would happen if it was built from a 250 HP to let's say closer to 400 HP ?

You will have a lot of eyes on you for this build, great looking boat I hope you like taking photos :D
Like jeffh said the 5.7 GM/mercruiser is 325hp so should have plenty power and easy to get parts for. http://www.michiganmotorz.com/mercruise ... p-762.html

I love the look of the new torpedo. Last summer I thought the Monaco was the boat for me; specifically the utility. I almost stopped by the Glen L offices to pick up a set of plans in person last August when my family went to Disneyland since it is relatively close. The Monaco that David Archer recently posted photos of is exactly what I thought I wanted. The seats next to the motor cover make his utility version unique. It would be practical for a family like mine. We could use it to cruise, ski, and fish some. There are plenty of seats for another family to join us.

Then I started thinking that everything I do is practical. Why not do something flashy for a change? The torpedo may not be the Swiss Army Knife of boats, but it makes a statement. Most of you seem to enjoy the "wow" factor of others drooling over what you've created. All these boats look great, but the torpedo has swagger. It just looks cool.

I'm not ready to jump into a project like this quite yet, but looking at the pictures makes me want those torpedo plans so that I can prepare for someday. Until that day, I'll live through your posts and read the Glen L books I purchased last summer.

Good luck to those that take on the challenge of this fine looking boat.

Ok I've read all of the instructions and I have her almost completely built... In my mind at least :D
The transom seems to be a bit of a B I T C H but other then that I don't see to many problems.
They say that she will have a hull speed of 50 MPH.... Was hoping for a little more but I guess we wil see... This leads me to the question of the prop... How do I know if I need a 12 or 13" prop? I plan on using one of the new 5.7 EFI motors .
Well it looks like I'm heading for an adventure.. An expensive one but hopefully this will be a great one that I will not forget.

Do you think you'll build the traditional cockpit or the optional version with the pedestal seat to allow more seating?

I had thought of the optional pedestal seating but at the moment I think it will be the traditional.

Looks like you're the first, and only, so far.. but I am sure you won't be the last to build one.

As far as hull speed, there is a good read here:
http://www.glen-l.com/how-fast.html

There is a Monaco builder showing 70 mph with a significantly beefed-up motor. I think is more a matter of HP/Prop than purely hull design.

Image

If the question is can it go 55+ mph safely.... based on the similar hull shapes in other builds, I don't see a reason why not.

Well so far I think the motor I'm going to go with will be the 5.7L MerCruiser "Scorpion" - FUEL INJECTION - 330hp That should make her go 8)
