I would like to finally start a boat build this fall. After looking over all the plan options I find myself unable to make a desicion on which boat might be the best for my family. I'm looking for a mahogony inboard boat around 20 feet that can handle bigger water, has some good speed with a small block(50+), and something that I can fit in cumfortably. I'm 6'5" 250lbs. All the plans look great but I'm just worried about how small the captains seat looks. Any help from other builders would be great.

Dan

Hi Dan
Well i'm also 6'5" 250 lb and i put my money on torpedo. I plan on streching the cockpit a few inches if needed.

Hi Dan,

The great thing about building your own boat is the ability to design/modify it to suit yourself. As long as you heed an balance requirements you can easily make the seating area larger to suit. An extended Gentry would allow the extra cockpit room although it is adequate at present, but of course in her standard guise she only seats 3 across. The deeper Vee of Renegade might make it better for chop, and the rear mount engine would give plenty of room forward. I am certainly no expert, but do wonder if the old classic design hulls will handle the seas?

Hi Dan,

First, what kind of general building if any, do you have under your belt, and do you have people that can help you out on some of the more complex building stages?

BTW, ... The Torpedo, ... is one sweet looking ride!

I had the same problem deciding so I went and sat in a 19 ft Century resorter and decided it was too small so that bumped me up a couople of feet on length. The older designs are probably not the best for rough water as they are mostly flat bottom. THe Monte Carlo is bigger than I needed and has taken longer than I planned but I would not trade it now as its almost done. A couple of feet longer in a boat can make a lot of difference in ride and comfort. And having said that I still would like to build the ZIP.

Maybe it will be done by G6 and maybe not.

An Old Salt once said that a man needs 1foot of waterline length for each year of his age.

Thanks for all the answers. The list of boats that I have owned is very long, I currently own a 33' fiberglass that stays in a slip. I am not looking for anything that can handle large waves just something that I will feel safe in if the winds pick up. I have been a finish carpenter for most of my life with many custome builds under my belt. I have never built a boat but I don't think its something I can't handle. I'll keep looking around and hopefully will find one that I fall in love with.

I had very little woodworking skills and managed to build something I am proud of, so I imagine you can take your pick of the boat designs here and create something wonderful for yourself.

If I had your skills, and had the space, I would have built the Monaco.

It has a gorgeous complex curve hull at the bow to cut through waves but still wide & flat enough to be stable on lakes if the wind picks up.

Personally, I've fallen in love with a few dozen Glen-L hulls!!! The are not hard to love ;) I am sure something will 'sing' to you. The process of building makes a very intimate bond with your project. Knowing every nook and cranny, knowing your hands brought it to live, is something to experience.

It's not your typical mahogany runabout, but what about the Renegade? That might fit the bill.
