Hi, I'm new to the forum. I am getting ready to order a set of plans for the Zip. I really like the style of this type of runabout and the motor size is still in the realm of hat I would be willing to spend. What my question is since I live about 2 miles from Lake St. Clair (I live in Roseville, Michigan), Is this boat suitable for this lake or is there a better boat in the plans that are still about that size and horsepower power rating. I will appreciate all comments and suggestions as this would be my first boat. I have just finished a strip canoe (Wee Lassie) and that went well.

That's where mines going, but will mostly be in the bays all around Harsens. Not sure how much boating you've done but Lake St. Clair can get very nasty at times. If your looking for an all around fun boat to easily transport go for the zip. If you're looking for the big waters get your $$ out and go for a 24' to 26' CC. There are some zips in the area if you want a ride or just check them out pm me or Ted. Travis

Yeah, I've scene the lake turn... I would only plan on going out on 'nice' days, knowing full well it can still turn. That lake is so shallow. My plan was to not venture out to far and explore around the bay and the channels around here. I would like to venture across the bay one day to Harsens Island also, as one of my friends live there. The looks, the ease of transporting and being fairly economical to run make this my style of boat. I may take you up on the offer to take a look at a Zip. thanks Ken

I would be happy to give you a ride and you can even take it for a drive if you want to come on over. I am located on Sylvan Lake in Pontiac, Michigan. I am guessing it is about 35-40 min. for your location depending on traffic. The Zip does OK in chop up to 2-3 feet but it can get pretty bumpy.

Come take a ride and see for yourself.. It is a great boat and a blast to own but it really is not a boat for really rough waters.

Call me anytime.

p.s. I will be bringing my Zip to the Glen-L gathering.

Hi Ted,

thanks for offer and info on Zip. Well with the few answers and further digging into the posts, it looks like the Zip will be my next project. I'll order up the plans this wekend. I've checked with Public Lumber and they have a fair price on the quarter sawn white oak and have it in stock...

I'm also fairly comfortable with using woodworking tools, as I probably have most the tools needed.

thanks again and when I get started I'll start posting pics along with a lot of questions.

so, I live on Lake Erie. it does get really nasty, at times. other times, it can even become a sheet of glass. and it can go from glass to "oh my lord" in a hurry. i have almost decided on the zip as my first build. i dont plan on being far away from port... maybe half an hour. and will be heading back at the first sign of a nasty turn. my question is... how big a swell can she handle? i have the use of friends boats for bad days, but am curious what kinda use i may get out of her when i finish!
Thanks for any advice!!!

Hi Ken,

Did you get started on your Zip? I purchased my plywood from Public Lumber and was able to pick up all my lumber at Armstrong's Millworks in Highland, Michigan on M-59.

Ted,
I can't help but notice in your pics on your blog, you have four full grown adults in your zip. most people on this forum seem to think it can only be 2 adults and two kids..... I'm glad/pumped to see thats all oppinion, as the look of the zip is what is leaning me in that direction!!!!
What HP do you run?

We've had four adults in our Zip, and it reminded me of just how small that boat is. I wouldn't want to get into any sort of "real" chop with that load.

thanks!
very good point, def dont need to have a "big one" come over my bow with all that weight!!! then again, really looking for the style that this boat offers, so i am willing to sacrifice "every day use", and keep her in the break wall a lot!!!! why couldnt i live on a more stable body of water!!!??? but, the perch are ON right now, and for the lats week, (six days, but who is counting) Erie has been calmer than i ever remember.... maybe because im much more concious of it thinking about a build!!!

thanks for all the feedback. My son ordered the zip plans for me. Next on the list is rearrange the shop (garage) to make room. I'll probably get rid of surface grinder and the 'big' lathe and probably the planer too (if I need anything planed I'll take to my friend over on Harsens Island). I'll start a new thread when i get started.
