Looking great Doug!. I'd put a couple of coats on the sides just to seal it. Stops anything inadvertently dripped on there from soaking into the grain. Isn't it fantastic when you stand back and see her beautiful shiny bottom! 8)
By the time I have built a boat, I'll be ready to build a boat....

Mike; One more coat (I think :? ) of varnish, then buffing and the boot stripe. Hoping for the middle of next week. Got 9 coats on and sanded, and it's finally looking good. The Pettit varnish is beautifull stuff to work with.

Doug, This is exactly what I want to do to my Ski Bass. I have finished the hull from plywood and have enough mahogany to cover the hull from the chine up. The hull is still on the building frame upside down. My mahogany planks are 1/8 inch thick, and 4 inches wide and 6 to 8 feet long. I read what was available from your information and looked at the photos, I am an amateur and want very much to have good results but I am not sure where to start. Do I need to work from the chine down to the sheer? do I need to mark lines on the plywood hull first? I am just not sure where to begin and with lumber prices what they are I don't want to waste any mahogany. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Mike; Sorry I missed your last call. Took last year off to build a mini camper and travel to Vancouver Island and back....12,000 km. over 4 1/2 weeks. Had a great time and have now seen the country from coast to coast. (Build is posted on the RV. section here).
I am now working on the rear deck on the Gentry. Just resolved the fuel tank problem. (Buy or Build?) Was cheaper and faster to buy a "plastic" Ameri-Kart and it is installed. Once I get the rear sub deck installed I can finish the planking and work on the cowling. I am varying from the plans on the cowling, with a lifting hood with a "hood scoop" in front of a shortened cowl. Once get it complete I may post pictures. Right now work is somewhat limited by income, but am hoping for launch this summer. Engine is all ready, but tere is still the drive train and instrumentation.....two pricey jobs.

Mike; Just noticed your address; For our 50th a few years back I surprised my wife with a helicopter ride from the great guys based I think in Tamworth. Pilot landed in a vacant lot right in town next to our house and did a tour of all our old homesteads, then flew us to Kingston. We went out for a dinner cruise, stayed overnight, then took the train home. Great time and a real surprise.

Finally back at work on the Gentry.
Drive train is complete and engine has been running (How sweet it is!). Painting is complete, however some wet sanding and polishing remains to be done when all the other deck work is complete. There will be accidents
Instrument panel/dash are done as well as wiring. Steering wheel is finished. Stainless rub rail has been made and installed.
Note; Wheel, instrument panel and SS rub rail were all roughed out at a water jet facility and finished /assembled by me. A great money saver as well as a feeling of accomplishment.
Now mocking up a windshield and deciding whether we really want it.
Also working on the upholstery. The lifting hood is done also.
