Ski king build Tasmania, Australia.

Hi all I thought it was about time I shared the progress of my build.

I'm building a ski king. As per plans so she is 15ft. Building it out of King Billy pine and celery top pine. Both specialty Tasmanian timber. Historically used for boat building, but now getting harder to find. The bottom will be ply. With 6 or 8oz sheet of glass over it. The sides and deck will be shaped with ply then covered in King Billy.

Motor wise she will have a Holden commodore motor, 3.8l v6 producing about 133kw at the fly. Ideally the plan is to run a Borg Warner dog box in her but I will have to see what I can afford/find at the time.

So here are some photos.

Cheers, Tom.

Your build is looking nice, Tom. The Ski King is a really pretty boat, and a V-6 should be a nice choice for power. Being shorter than an inline four or V-8, you should be able to fit everything in there without having an excessive shaft angle. Wish I'd had your shop space when we built our Zip!

Yeah its a great shed to work in, I've dinabolted the boat to the floor to get it nice and solid. she is at the stage now where i could pick her up and move her where ever though.

Hi Tom,

I'm just about to buy the plans for the Ski King, is it hard to convert the imperial sizes to metric? I couldn't seem to find a sample of the plans anywhere online so I don't know what I'm in for.

I'm a carpenter by trade based in Melbourne, really excited about building my own boat!

Hey mate. Yeah it was a bit of work. I scanned the plans. Put them in Photoshop and wrote my metric measurements over the top. Took quite a while.

I found it basicly easier to forget metric and work in inches. Still get tapes and carpenter's rulers in both.

Me too Tony. I'd just get metric rules and tapes and use them.

Yeah I have used a bit of a hybrid of both to be honest.
If things ask for a 2inch beam etc. I will cut using the imperial side of the rule. But my brain doesn't work in fractions of inches very well so I tend to use the metric conversion for most things.

Well its been a few years since I laid the keel. Much swearing and changes of plans later, tonight I made the big step of winching her onto the trailer for the first time.

Update/info:
Bottom of the hull is 6mm ply with dynel cloth over the top.
Sides are 3mm ply with 10mm King Billy pine strip planked over the top.
Deck, 6mm ply, with 10mm King Billy pine strip planked, with Celery Top pine inlays
Decided to bite the bullet and put some real power in. 5.7L mercuiser. running direct drive off the flywheel end.
12" prop.
1" shaft.

Starting to see some real progress. Still enjoying the build.

Tom
