Hi Steve,
What an amazing project! I am impressed by both size and quality of the work you have done. You will have to get a drone to fly around it so we can see the entire boat. (the big picture) :lol: I am anxious to see what you will do next.

Thanks Jim for your kind words... actually most days there seems to be little change to show for the effort. Hopefully that will improve as more loose ends start to come together! Will post more as progress permits...

A brief post... got the emergency tiller back from powder coat shop. Pics show attachment to a square section milled into the rudder shaft accessed through a deck plate per plans.

Tiller arm is just above waist high and long enough to look around salon to see where you're going. Hope we never need to use this!

In the spirit of sharing setbacks (without embarrassing pics) today was spent cleaning up after pumping 3 gallons of hydraulic fluid into the bilge trying to fill the steering system... there was a loose (and unseen) elbow fitting in the bilge where the lines turn vertical at the midships bulkhead. "Is there any fluid at the flybridge helm pump? No? ... well here's another gallon " :shock: :oops:

Sheesh...

(BTW Dawn detergent cuts hydraulic fluid like crazy... so the episode ended with an [unplanned] extended test of the engine compartment bilge pumps... )

yes I put in 5 litres engine oil before I realized the sump plug was out :oops:

Guys,

Sometimes ya just need to do these things to go ahead and get them out of the way early. Now you both don’t have to worry about the bilge’s 1st oil. lol

I’m assuming you’ll have a gallon of Dawn on hand at all times now. Good item to store in engine room, specialty since you will have her in a classy berth with other fine yachts.

Ya can scrub down engine room (once she’s in her berth) with dawn and when ya pump out it just looks like your washing clothes. lol

In Gulf Shores, we had someone spill a little gasoline in the marina. This old biddy saw the guy squirt a little Dawn to get rid of the sheen. She called the USCG to report him. The coast guard guy told her, "Lady, that's what we use."

Two steps forward, one step back...

Finally have the flybridge sliding hatch framed in. Will add skins after final fitting with powder coat to follow.

Added a few switches to overhead helm soffit. Tested night vision lights...

Not good news :( ... steel fitting vs. bronze housing and a little too much enthusiasm with the wrench. Hairline crack in helm pump aft housing. Waiting to hear from Kobelt regarding the fix :? .

Thanks... I have put off getting to the hydraulics because I don't have much experience with it. Guess that's going to change quickly! :roll:

BTW just heard back from Kobelt... they can repair the unit by replacing the back housing so I won't be out of pocket as much as I feared, but they were pretty matter of fact about calling out my rookie mistake :oops: .

We have guys all the time that over torque fittings. Most of the time, in a situation just like you have there, guys will take a short cut and not hold a back up wrench. Looks like the brass housing has a JIC type fitting and the coupling looks like a swedgeloc. Two different thread preps, 2 different torques.

Check ya torques and also tread sealants. While a lot of these threads don’t require a sealant per say as they have a metal to metal (M2M) seal face, if it’s SS to SS make up, loc-tite makes a thread sealant for these. More like a lube to prevent caulding.

Loc-tite has a lot on their web sites as will the net if you google.

Can you identify all the hydraulic thread types you have in your system?
