Fiberglass Sides?

Postby tysman52 » Wed Dec 09, 2015 11:10 pm

Getting close to planking on my Monte Carlo and thinking ahead to fiberglass.
Any opinions on fiberglassing sides?
Seems like it would obviously be more durable, but also maybe harder to repair if damaged? Thoughts?

I used 4 oz deck cloth on the top and sides of my Monte Carlo
Time will tell if that was the right thing to do

Has anyone had to perform a major fiberglass repair on the topsides? Seems to me repairs would be more difficult with fiberglass compared to just the wood planking? Any recommendations out there?

It's not bad. Fortunately, most folks rarely have any problems with damage anyway save for the occasional bump up against the dock.

Remember that the real purpose for putting glass cloth down is to increase abrasion resistance and that's just what you need on your topsides.
Isn't it amazing!! The person that never has the fortitude to pursue his own dreams, will be the first to try and discourage you from pursuing yours.

Seems to me if it's applied correctly in the first place you shouldn't have to do a "major" repair. The cloth is a shield that protects your epoxy encapsulation presumably much better than just epoxy alone. I think a lot of folks don't use deck cloth over a planked veneer, however. Although, I could be wrong about that assumption.
