Titebond 3

Postby Hercdrvr » Wed Dec 07, 2016 11:37 am

Decking going on the hood of my Malahini. Using Titebond 3 to glue it all down. I did some research and it is equal to or even stronger than epoxy and it dries much faster than epoxy in cool weather. Waterproof too.
The whole deck gets covered in 10 coats of varnish to seal water out.
Anyone see any big problem with this technique ?

The big thing to me about epoxy is the gap filling properties. If you're not worried about gap filling I see no issues with titebond III. I used it some on my helm seat. It's just so easy to grab that bottle of glue and squirt some on and not have to spend five minutes measuring, mixing, and adding filler to epoxy. Looks like things are coming along nicely!

1st few rows are down. Needs sanding to clean off excess glue on the maple and level out all the pieces but I'm satisfied so far. I milled all the mahogany and maple myself from 8/4 stock. Found a great price on the Mahogany, $10.50 board/ft for 8/4's lumber. Should be able to cover entire top fore and aft decks for $250. Lots of lumber in 12ft long piece of 8/4.
There will gaps here and there to fill but no big deal

Going for a solid 8 out 10 on the craftsmanship scale

8 out of 10 sounds good to me. I gave up on perfection long ago.
